The Salisbury City Council will be holding its 31st annual Future Directions and Goal Setting Retreat today and Thursday.

According to the agenda for the retreat, the council hopes to review the current state of the organization, establish a shared vision for the city, develop its goals to support the vision and build a foundation for collaboration for the future.

The first day of the retreat will start with a luncheon featuring Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant as the guest speaker. The speech’s title is “Creating a Bold Vision,” and Hinnant will be talking about how Kannapolis created a collective community vision to redefine itself, according to a letter from Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander.

The afternoon sessions will include discussions on the Customer Service Initiative and the Salisbury Way, the current state of the organization and an analysis on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the city.

The first day will conclude with a session about why public service is important and what the council will want their legacy to be.

Day two will start with updates on the council’s major initiatives, including the West End transformation, downtown initiatives, the 2020 and 2030 plans and other opportunities.

There will also be a session about working collaboratively with other community partners, including the Rowan-Salisbury School System and the Rowan County Board of Commissioners.

Other sessions will be about leveraging the city’s strengths, establishing a shared vision and laying out the top goals and priorities for the council.
