Intercon Inc. announced that it plans to immediately open an Intercon Furniture warehouse and distribution facility in Spencer.

The 100,000-square-foot facility will be at 100 Sowers Road and is being leased from Swing Transport.

The company plans to initially hire 15 people.

Intercon Furniture is a Utah-based furniture importer and distributer. It was founded in 1976 by Tom and Linda Turpin and is still family-owned and operated.

The company has become an industry leader in designing, marketing and manufacturing wood dining, bedroom and home entertainment furniture.

“I think that Spencer, being located close to Greensboro and Charlotte, really makes us a great location for Intercon’s distribution operation,” Spencer Mayor Jim Gobbel said. “I appreciate the efforts of all involved in negotiating this deal.”

Breck Dorton and Marc DeLille from Triad Commercial Properties brokered the transaction on behalf of the company.

Intercon Furniture’s products can be found in furniture stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, and its distribution facilities are in North Carolina, Utah, Washington, Vietnam, China and Malaysia.

Westwood Design, an Intercon affiliate, will also operate out of the Spencer facility. Westwood imports and distributes baby furniture and its products can be found in baby furniture stores in the U.S. and Canada.

Lorin Pickering, Intercon Furniture’s operations manager, said that the company “greatly appreciates the hospitality shown by Rowan County Commission Chairman Greg Edds and County Manager Aaron Church. They have both worked very hard to help with the transition into the new warehouse.”

Edds said the company’s move to Rowan County is a great opportunity for the company and the county.

“We are pleased that the Intercon family has chosen Rowan County as their newest location to expand their U.S. distribution footprint. We appreciate the confidence they have placed in Rowan County and we are certain that this will be a great opportunity for both Intercon and our county to benefit greatly,” he said.

Before the move to Spencer, the company used Shelba Johnson, a third party logistics company in Lexington, to warehouse and ship its furniture.

Pickering said that the “Spencer location is ideally located for shipping and servicing our East Coast customers.”
