Catawba’s men’s basketball lost to Newberry, 93-81, on the road on Wednesday.
Newberry led 44-40 at halftime but took control in the early stages of the second half with a run triggered by Mitch Riggs.
Riggs scored nine straight Newberry points.
Jameel Taylor had another big game for the Indians, shooting 10-for-20 and scoring 22 points. Reggie Perkins had a stellar game with three 3-pointers and 13 points. Andrew Ingram scored 12 points, and Jerrin Morrison added 10 for the Indians.
Catawba (10-13, 8-9) shot 41.3 percent. Newberry shot 44.9 percent.
Xavier Holmes led the Wolves with 14 points. Newberry had five players in double figures.
D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) shot 5-for-5 from the field, made two 3-pointers and scored 13 points for the Wolves (15-8, 10-7).

Carson’s boys lost at Hickory Ridge, 96-79, on Tuesday in SPC basketball.
The Cougars (12-11, 8-9) were led by Jamarius Hairston with 19 points. Brenden Westbrook had 17, and Cameron Prugh scored 14.
Jailen Williams scored seven, while Owen White had six.
Hickory Ridge (16-6, 12-5) got 19 points from three players — Avery Metcalf, Andrew Metcalf and Jarren Cottingham.
Hickory Ridge led 52-45 at halftime but opened up a lead in the third quarter.
Carson’s Senior Night is Friday against Cox Mill.

East Rowan’s boys lost at Central Cabarrus, 68-53, on Tuesday.
East led most of the first half, but the Vikings (9-12, 6-11) made a run before halftime.
Trevor Scruggs led the Mustangs (5-18, 3-14) with 12 points. Bravon Goodlett had 10.
Lucas Morton scored eight, and Austin Love and Brevin Goodlett had six apiece.
“We went 11-for-28 on free throws,” East coach Kurt Misenheimer said. “That was a huge factor and it took us out of the game mentally.”
Senior Night for East is tonight against South Rowan.
East’s boys and South’s boys and girls will be playing their season finales. Only the top eight teams qualify for the league tournament in the 10-team SPC.

Davidson County Community College’s Tre Williams (Carson) had 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds in a 97-90 win against Caldwell CC on Wednesday.

Women’s hoops
Kennesaw State’s Kelly Dulkoski (Carson) made three 3-pointers and scored 13 points in Wednesday’s 61-53 loss to USC Upstate.

College swimming
Catawba freshman Marcia-Mariel Erhart set a new school mark in the 1000 free on Wednesday, while the women’s 200 medley relay squad also set a new standard on the opening night of the 2016 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships being held through Saturday at the Rock Hill YMCA. After six events, the Catawba men stand sixth and the women are 11th.

College tennis
The Catawba men’s tennis team fell to Pfeiffer 6-3 in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Center. The loss drops Catawba to 4-4 on the season while the Pfeiffer Falcons are 3-0.

GT beats Wake
ATLANTA — Marcus Georges-Hunt scored a career-high 30 points, including four free throws in the final 30 seconds, and Georgia Tech held off Wake Forest 71-66 on Wednesday night, giving the Demon Deacons their ninth straight ACC loss.
Charles Mitchell had 14 points and 15 rebounds for Georgia Tech (13-11, 3-8 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Yellow Jackets snapped a three-game losing streak with only their second win in their last eight games.
Wake Forest (10-14, 1-11) has its longest streak of ACC losses since 11 straight at the end of the 2010-11 season.
Devin Thomas led the Demon Deacons with 20 points. Bryant Crawford had 10.
Georges-Hunt made each of his seven free throws, including the crucial attempts late in the game.
The Yellow Jackets’ eight conference losses were by an average of 5.8 points, with no loss by more than nine points.

ECU falls in three OTs
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Louis Dabney tied a career high with 32 points and Tulane did not lead by more than two points until the third overtime when the Green Wave went on to beat East Carolina 100-92 Wednesday night, ending a six-game losing streak.
Dabney took an inbound pass with 14.8 seconds left in regulation, dribbled down the clock and worked his way into the lane to hit a hook shot with 2.4 seconds left to tie it at 71-all. In the first overtime, Dabney was left alone and hit a 3-pointer from the corner to knot it at 78. In the second OT, Dabney’s 3-point play with 28 seconds remaining gave the Green Wave an 85-83 lead. Kentrell Barkley’s putback at the 20-second mark tied it at 85 and Tulane missed a long 3 at the buzzer.
Malik Morgan hit five 3-pointers and had a career-high 26 points for Tulane (9-16, 2-10 American).
Prince Williams and B.J. Tyson each scored 25 for ECU (10-14, 2-9).

Davidson wins
DAVIDSON — Brian Sullivan hit six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points and seven assists, and Peyton Aldridge had 13 points and 10 rebounds to help Davidson beat La Salle 79-66 Wednesday night.
