Salisbury kicked off the soccer season with a 3-0 victory over visiting South Rowan on Thursday in sloppy conditions.
Sophomore Julia Honeycutt scored twice for the Hornets, and junior Katie Bullock had one goal.
Shelby Holden and Amelia Steinman had assists.
The shutout in goal went to Juliana Anderson. Salisbury got outstanding play from freshman Ellen Simons, sophomore Bethanie Stauffer, Kayla Honeycutt and Nellie Brown.
Next up for the Hornets is Albemarle on Monday.

Prep softball
West Rowan pounded Northwest Cabarrus 14-4 on Thursday in SPC softball.
Parker Greene homered and drove in two runs for the Falcons (2-0). Mary Sobataka tripled, doubled and singled. Peyton Greene drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher. She struck out five.
Savannah Hott homered for the Trojans (1-1).

Prep baseball
The Greater Cabarrus Stallions scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to a 13-0 win over East Montgomery on Thursday.
Hunter Shepherd had two doubles and five RBIs.
Seth Cauble, Noah Jarrett and McConner Wallace had two hits each. Noah Jarrett allowed one hit in three innings. Tyler Hartsell and AJ Knight pitched a scoreless inning each.
The Stallions will play Southlake at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at CMC Northeast Stadium.

Men’s basketball
Catawba’s Jameel Taylor was named second team All-SAC.
Newberry’s D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) was named to the league’s All-Freshman team.

Women’s basketball
Catawba’s Bri Johnson (first team), Terri Rogers (second team) and Jada Huntley (honorable mention) were honored on the All-SAC team.

College tennis
Michael Ogden (Salisbury) is playing No. 3 doubles for N.C. State.
Ogden has a 7-5 record at No. 3 doubles and a 1-0 record at No. 2 doubles.

College football
Catawba released its 2016 schedule on Thursday.
The regular season will open with a trip to West Georgia on Sept. 3 and will conclude with a trip to Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 12. There are five home games.
Winston-Salem State has replaced Davidson on the early schedule.

7th-grade hoops
Erwin’s undefeated girls clinched a share of the regular-season championship by beating Mooresville 43-20 on Thursday.
Erwin, which jumped out to a 19-0 lead, improved to 12-0 with two games left.
Carleigh Perry led the Eagles with 14 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Colbie Perry had 11 points and seven boards. Lisa Simmerson scored six points. Lani Isley had six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Jenna Robinson added five points.

Jayvee baseball
Bryant Young (three hits, four RBIs) and pitcher Daniel Durham led West Rowan to a 14-4 win against Robinson on Wednesday.
