Clarence Barnhardt

Clarence Calvin Barnhardt, 94, Kannapolis, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2006) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 4, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Barnhardt was a son of the late John Arthur and Kate Litaker Barnhardt.
A resident of Kannapolis since 1939, he graduated from the China Grove Farm Life School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps 3rd Amphibious Division during the South Pacific Campaign of World War II. He participated in combat operations on Okinawa and Guadalcanal. Following the end of the war, he was a member of the Marine Corps humanitarian relief efforts to assist the people of China.
He retired from Cannon Mills in 1978 after 45 years of service.
He was a member of American Legion Beaver-Pittman Post 115, where he served as post historian and service officer for many years. In 1985, he was awarded a life membership and inducted into Voiture Local 1173 of the American Legion honor group The Order of Forty and Eight.
In 1986, the Pilot Club named him volunteer of the year.
He was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, where he had service on the church council and the stewardship, social and yard committees. He had last participated in the Wednesday Bible Study and Joe Ridenhour Sunday School Class.
His wife, Mary Stutts Barnhardt, died May 3, 2001.
Survivors include sons Calvin Barnhardt, Eden, and John Barnhardt, Raleigh; devoted friend Ruth Ballard of Kannapolis; and four grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 7, 2006), Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Rhoades and the Rev. Dr. Hoke Ritchie. Entombment, West Lawn Memorial Park mausoleum, China Grove, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
