Area Sports Briefs: West softball moves into tie for first

West Rowan’s softball team ovecame a 5-0 deficit and fought back to win, 8-6, at Central Cabarrus on Monday.
The win created a four-way tie at the top of the SPC that includes West, Central, Hickory Ridge and Cox Mill.
West (13-4, 11-3) scored three runs in the fifth to get back in the game and won it with a five-run rally in the seventh.
Peyton Greene was the winning pitcher and struck out five.
Parker Greene had two hits and two RBIs. Peyton Greene and Alex Linder had two hits. Hannah Pratt drove in two runs.
Pratt, Parker Greene and Taylor Martin had doubles.
South wins
South Rowan outscored Carson, 10-7, in SPC softball played at Carson on Monday.
Abby Fields and Makayla Strickland had three hits each for the Raiders. Riley Corriher and Brooke Lowery drove in two runs apiece.
Jalee Rollins was the winning pitcher.
South’s three-run sixth proved decisive.
Prep baseball
Austin Love struck out 14 batters and pitched into the seventh inning to leadfirst-place West Rowan to a 5-2 win at Central Cabarrus on Monday.
Love (5-1) also had two hits to lead West’s offense. Brandon Walton scored two runs and drove in one.
Tyler Wheeler got the last two outs on the mound for the Falcons.
West had eight hits and held Central to four.
West (17-3, 12-2) opened up a two-game lead over East Rowan and Carson in the SPC race.
The Falcons play at East on Wednesday. Bryan Ketchie is the probable starting pitcher.
East falls
East Rowan’s six-game winning streak ended with an 8-1 loss on Monday to Northwest Cabarrus ace Alex Rodriguez.
Ike Freeman had three of East’s eight hits, while John Owen had two.
East was 1-for-12 at the plate with runners in scoring position and got its only run on a wild pitch.
Corbin Moss, who has been starring for East’s jayvee team, took the loss on the mound. Jordan Wise and Colby Myrick also pitched.
East hosts West Rowan on Wednesday.
Prep tennis
Salisbury rolled 9-0 against West Davidson on Monday to clinch the CCC championship.
The Hornets (14-0) will close out the regular-season schedule on Wednesday with a Senior Night game against North Rowan.
East wins
East Rowan won on Senior Night, beating Central Cabarrus, 9-0, to stay undefeated.
Prep golf
West Davidson won the CCC Golf Championships at Colonial on Monday.
The Green Dragons shot 320. Salisbury finished second at 330, with East Davidson third at 357.
North Rowan was fourth at 433.

East wins
East Rowan won Monday’s SPC match at Cabarrus Country Club.
The Mustangs shot 151 to hold off Concord (158), Hickory Ridge (164) and Carson (166).
East’s Nick Lyerly was medalist with a 33.
Christopher Queen and Logan Shuping shot 39s, while Bryson Sprinkle and Ben Rollins shot 40s for the Mustangs.
Walker Cress shot 34 to pace Concord, while Stephen Carroll shot 35.
Patrick Street shot 40 to lead Carson. Parker Chavis and Landon Johnson shot 40s for South Rowan. Braxton Corriher’s 46 led West Rowan.
Prep soccer
Salisbury won 3-1 at East Davidson on Monday and improved to 13-2-1 overall and 4-2 in the CCC.
Salisbury had lost to East Davidson earlier this season.
Katie Bullock got the Hornets on the board when she accepted a pass from Kayla Honeycutt, beat a defender into the middle of the field, and blasted a shot from 20 yards that hit the underside of the crossbar and inside the endline.
Salisbury made it 2-0 12 minutes later on a corner kick taken by Ceci Cardelle and headed home by Julia Honeycutt.
With the Hornets leading 2-1 in the second half, Julia Honeycutt assisted on a goal by Ellen Simons.
“ It was a hard-earned, well-deserved victory,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrishs aid.
Salisbury got excellent play from Nellie Brown, who played her best match of the season.
Also playing well for the Hornets were Kathryn Rusher and Amelia Steinman.
Next up for the Hornets is another CCC matchup Wednesday at home vs. Lexington. Game time is 6 p.m.
Championships
Rowan County Championships will be held today in golf and track and field.
Golf is 18 holes at Warrior, starting at 1 p.m.
East Rowan is the defending champion. East’s Nick Lyerly is the reigning individual champ.
The track meet is at East with field events and the 3200 starting at 4:30 p.m. and other running events starting at 5:30 p.m.
East Rowan’s boys have won four straight county championships.
East’s girls are also the defending champs.
Prep basketball
North Rowan will host an all-star game for Rowan seniors on Thursday, April 21.
The girls game is at 6 p.m., with the boys game at around 7:30.
Admission is $5.
College golf
Catawba got 74s from Jordan Taylor and Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) on the second day of the SAC Championships. Catawba is tied for 11th entering today’s final round.
Intimidators
Kannapolis played the third-longest game in Intimidators history, lasting 5:01, before falling to the West Virginia Power, 8-7, in 16 innings at Appalachian Power Park on Monday.

The Kannapolis Intimidators have received outfielder Micker Adolfo, the Chicago White Sox No. 8 prospect from Extended Spring Training.

The first Bark in the Park game of the season is on Sunday, April 24.
Pet lovers may bring their four-legged family members with them to Intimidators Stadium.
The game against the Delmarva Shorebirds starts at 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4 p.m.
College softball
Pfeiffer (31-15) broke the school record for wins by sweeping a doubleheader at Winston-Salem State on Monday. Pfeiffer has been playing fast-pitch softball 18 years. The 2008 squad had held the record with 30 wins.
College baseball
Catawba plays Barton at home tonight at 6 p.m.
