SALISBURY — Rowan Museum’s current special exhibit, Tour of Duty: A Tribute to Vietnam Veterans, will close on Tuesday, May 31.

The museum is not normally open on holidays, only Friday through Sunday, but is opening May 30 and 31 to allow citizens one last opportunity to view the exhibit which features the latest in museum technology, allowing museum patrons, including thousands of school children, to use their iPads and smart phones to bring the veteran’s stories to life.

Unique to this exhibit is that many local Vietnam veterans have shared their service experiences. Veterans signed a wooden boot print with their name, rank and service dates. These boot prints have been placed in a trail in the exhibit. Museum patrons, using their iPads or smart phones, can aim at the boot print and bring the veteran’s story to life on their screen.

This new technology, called augmented reality, is used throughout the exhibit. This installation of the latest museum technology was funded through a special educational gift from Rowan County Commissioners.

The museum has continued to collect veterans’ stories and experiences to enhance the exhibit. Most recently, stories by Dr. Robert Wilson and David Post have been shared. Wilson served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain with the U.S. Dental Corps. Post tells his story of exemption from the draft lottery at the time in the 1960s.

The late CMSgt Edwin E. Morrison served in Vietnam in 1966, and his remains were found last year and returned to his family in June 2015. His great-grandson, Christian, tells his story.

The Rowan Museum is at 202 N. Main St. It is always open Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. But it will be open May 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. for the last chance to view the Vietnam exhibit. It is handicapped accessible.
