17th annual Rowan Blues & Jazz Festival is Saturday

- John Dee Holeman is one of the headliners at the Blues & Jazz Festival.
Headliners age 18 to 90 perform on the theme ‘Blues and Jazz music with a youthful influence’
The Rowan Blues & Jazz Society is dedicated to preserve, promote and present the art forms of blues and jazz music with emphasis on musical performances by musicians from the Piedmont Region of North Carolina. This year’s festival is on Saturday from 2 until 11 p.m., held at the corner of N. Lee and Kerr Streets, in the Rail Walks Art District.
Featured performers are:
John Dee Holeman — American Piedmont blues guitarist, singer and songwriter, born in 1929 near Hillsborough in rural Orange County;
Lakota John — Native American Piedmont blues artist who studied with Phil Wiggins and the late John Cephas (Lakota John will also be leading a youth music workshop on Friday);
Veronika Jackson — Renowned acoustic rhythmic blues artist;
Larry Davis — Vintage acoustic blues and jazz artist from Randolph County;
Joe Robinson — Renowned jazz trumpeter and local favorite.
A workshop (requiring pregistration) and youth events are Friday, and there will be live musical performances throughout the day and evening Saturday, from 2 until 11 p.m.
