GREENSBORO — East Rowan senior Taylor Kirk won the wheelchair shot put for the fourth time, and several Rowan athletes placed second in Friday’s 3A State Championships held in Greensboro at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track.

Kirk’s shot was eight feet, 11.5 inches.

West Rowan’s boys scored 29 points to place sixth. Carson’s boys scored 21 points for 12th. Jacksonville won the boys title with 45 points.

The top eight finishers scored in each event with a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system.

West senior Juwan Houston placed second in the 110 hurdles (14.57 seconds) and also took seventh in the 300 hurdles (40.69).

West senior J.T. Sanders took third in the 400 (49.46) and seventh in the 200 (22.25).

Houston and Sanders teamed with Cameron Butler and Joel Thomas-Morales for third in the 4×400 relay (3:20.87) and combined with Javon Quarles and Thomas-Morales for fourth in the 4X200 (1:29.21).

Carson junior Brenden Westbrook took second in the long jump with a personal-best effort of 22 feet, 5.5 inches.

Carson senior Zachary Marchinko had a third in the 1600 (4:20.89) and a fifth in the 3200 (9:30.20). The Charlotte signee combined with Silas Wertz, Dylan Koontz and Nick Cox for sixth place in the 4×800 (8:10.14).

Girls

East Rowan senior Brittany Small placed second in the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 4 inches.

South Rowan senior Brittany Luckey cleared 10-6 in the pole vault for second place.

Carson got points from freshman McKenzie Gadson and sophomore Chloe Kirkpatrick. Gadson ran 25.65 for seventh in the 200. Kirkpatrick pole-vaulted 9-6 and tied for sixth place.

Eastern Guilford won the girls title with 58 points.

The 2A and 4A State Championships will be held at North Carolina A&T today.

North Rowan Payton Russell leads a Cavalier team that could be a factor in the competition.

Russell is the defending 400-meter champ and is seeded second in the 100-meter dash.

The Cavaliers are projected to finish as high as second as team.

Burlington Cummings is the heavy favorite to win the 2A state title — possibly scoring 100 points as a team.
