Catawba’s baseball team was ousted from the double-elimination Southeast Regional on Friday.
Sixth-seeded Catawba (34-21) dropped two tough ones — a 6-5, 12-inning affair that started late Thursday night and dragged into Friday morning and a 6-4 decision on Friday night.
Catawba’s 12-inning loss to third-seeded Belmont Abbey was decided by Loreno Wright’s walk-off single in the 12th. That hit came at 2:43 a.m.
Dylan Richardson hit his 12th homer for the Indians. Kyle Smith and Luke Setzer drove in two runs apiece. Smith, Richardson and Jeremy Simpson had two hits each.
Setzer’s two-run single in the seventh gave Catawba a 5-4 lead, but Belmont Abbey got one in the ninth to tie and finally won in the 12th.
Shaefer Shepard pitched eight innings for Catawba and struck out a career-high 12. Avery Bowles took the loss.

In the 6-4 loss to seventh-seeded Mount Olive, Catawba was trailing 4-0 in the top of the sixth when it got clutch hits by Zac Almond and Simpson and tied the game at 4-all.
But Mount Olive came right back with the decisive runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Ryan Kahny relieved Connor Johnson in the fifth and took the loss. Smith, Simpson and Richardson had two hits each.
Catawba left 10 on base against Mount Olive after stranding 12 against Belmont Abbey.

College baseball
In Appalachian State’s 9-2 win against Longwood, Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had two hits and scored twice.
Matt Vernon (Davie) homered and drove in three runs. Mt. Pleasant grad Grayson Atwood also homered for ASU.

College softball
Catawba senior pitcher Carley Tysinger has earned second team All-America honors from both the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association and the Collegiate Commisioners Associaion.
Tysinger was picked to an All-America team in each of her four seasons.
Tysinger racked up a school and conference record 413 strikeouts over 297 innings this season.
Tysinger set a school record with 32 wins and posted 10 shutouts which matched her school mark.

Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators and Asheville Tourists were rained out on Friday night at McCormick Field. The teams will play two seven-inning games today, starting at 5:05 p.m.
The Intimidators return home on May 26.

Legion baseball
Weather permitting, fans will be admitted free tonight at Kannapolis’ 7 p.m. home game against Greensboro.
There’s been a lot of rain at Northwest Cabarrus, and there’s a chance the game will be moved from NWC to A.L. Brown.

College football
Appalachian State’s 2016 season opener at Tennessee has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 1, to accommodate a national telecast on the SEC Network.

College soccer
Pfeiffer’s defending national champion men’s team will start play on Sept. 1 against Lander.

College track
In the Southern Conference Championships, UNC Greensboro’s 4×400 relay team placed fifth. Jonathan Hodge (A.L. Brown) is part of that relay unit.
Western Carolina’s teams swept the SoCon championships.
WCU’s Jordan Bostian (West Rowan) finished seventh in the steeplechase. Josh Little (East Rowan) was ninth in the 100.

Spencer baseball

Basketball Camps: First session June 13-16, and second session Aug. 8-11. Time is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $95 for members, and $115 for potential members.
