Soldiers Memorial welcomes new pastor

Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church welcomes the Reverends Dr. Derrick R. and Margaret R. Anderson.

On Sunday, Dr. Derrick Anderson returns to Soldiers Memorial but this time as pastor.

Dr. Anderson is no stranger to the Salisbury-Rowan area. He spent ten years in Soldiers Memorial as his father, the late Rev. Herman Anderson (Bishop of the AME Zion Church, 1980-1995) was pastor from 1962-1972.

Anderson attended Knox Junior High School  and Boyden High School in the mid 1960s. He broke a barrier not only as one of the first African-American students, but he also was recognized as Rowan County’s Offensive Football Player in 1968.

After high school, he attended and graduated with a BA degree from Hampton University; he entered the University of Louisville receiving his MS; he received the Master of Divinity from Hood Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.

While in theology school at Hood, he served as youth minister at Soldiers Memorial under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. Joseph Johnson, now retired Bishop.

Hi mother, the late Ruth Rogers Anderson, served as Missionary Supervisor of the Second Episcopal District and on the Executive Board of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society.

Dr. Derrick Anderson’s grandfather, the late Bishop Felix S. Anderson, was the 64th Bishop of the AME Zion Church from 1980-1983.

Dr. Anderson comes to Soldiers with experience in building church edifices, making church renovations, directing Substance Abuse Programs, revitalizing ministries, leading discipleship, stewardship, and leadership programs.

Former churches where he has been pastor include: Bethel AME Zion, Charlotte; Sandy Ridge AME Zion, Landis; St. Paul AME Zion, Detroit, MI; and Grace AME Zion, Charlotte.

Dr. Anderson is married to the former Margaret Roberson who is presently serving as president of the International Ministers’ Spouses and Widows(ers) Fellowship.

Rev. Anderson is a graduate of North Rowan High School, attended Livingstone College and received her teaching certificate from the University of Louisville. New Hope AME Zion in Spencer is her home church.

 

St. Luke fundraiser 

St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, 410 Hawkinstown Road, is sponsoring a fundraiser by the Youth Deptartment today from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. that will feature hot dogs, fish plates and sandwiches, chicken plates and sandwiches, and desserts.  The proceeds will go toward Youth for Christ fund.

The United Ministerial Alliance will meet at noon today at Love Christian Center 102 N. Long St., East Spencer. Clergy is welcome.

 

Anniversary event today at Union Chapel AME Zion

LINWOOD – The Zionettes will be celebrating their 59th Anniversary on this evening at 6 p.m. at the Union Chapel AME Zion Church, 4329 Sowers Road. The Rev. Dairl Scott Jr. is the host pastor.

Concordia news

Concordia bus dedication — Concordia Lutheran Church will dedicate its new church bus on Sunday, at 9:50 a.m. in the parking lot. This new 33-passenger bus will be used for the church’s youth, adult, Senior Lunch Bunch and outreach ministries. Dedication prayers with a fun and unique christening will be conducted to offer the bus to God’s glory. Concordia is located on Hwy 152 West in China Grove. Ken Reed is the pastor.

South Rowan Ministers — All church and ministry leaders are invited as the South Rowan Ministerial Association meets on June 21 for its monthly gathering of prayer and Bible study at 9 a.m. at the China Grove Roller Mill on Main Street. Word of Life Family Worship Center

Word of Life Family Worship Center will celebrate Father’s Day on Saturday with breakfast sponsored by the Women’s Fellowship.

On Sunday during the 10 a.m. service, recognition will be given to the fathers. The guest speaker will be Minister Dennis Baxter from Victory Christian Center in Charlotte.

Minister Baxter was born and raised in Charlotte. At the age of 16 he gave his life to Christ and began preaching at eighteen. After accepting the call of God on his life, Minister Baxter relocated to Lakeland, Fla. and attended Southeastern University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in theology and his certification in Christian education. He received his ordination from the Assemblies of God in 1982 and went on to serve as associate pastor and senior pastor of Freedom Assembly of God in Sanford, Fla. Following God’s direction, Minister Baxter relocated back to Charlotte in 1991 and joined Victory Christian Center. Since then, he has served under Pastor Gool’s leadership as the lead minister of Church in the City and was ordained under Victory Christian Center in 2005. Minister Baxter stepped down from his role at Church in the City in 2015, and will be pursuing his masters of divinity at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

The Triumphant Praise Children’s Choir will provide special music and there will be presentations by the Children’s Church Ministry. Pastor Martha and Elder Clinton Starks are the host pastors. For transportation or additional information call 704-633-2431.

 

World of Faith Outreach Ministry

United Ministerial Alliance joint service

THOMASVILLE – The United Ministerial Alliance will host its joint worship service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Citadel of Faith Christian Center, 108 Salem St.

LEXINGTON — Life in the Word Fellowship Church, 176 Meadow Drive, will host a Women’s Conference from 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 24, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 25.
