OAKMONT, Pa. — Salisbury’s Frank Adams III played 31 holes at the U.S. Open on Friday, teeing off for his rain-delayed first round at 10:12 a.m., and getting his second round started at 4:42 p.m.
Darkness halted play at 8:42 p.m., so Adams will play the final five holes of his second round at Oakmont Country Club today.
Adams is tied for 128th at 10-over in a field that began with 156 players and was reduced to 155 by a disqualification.
A total of 78 players — half the field — will not begin their second rounds until Saturday morning, with the earliest tee times at 7 a.m. Those who make the cut will turn around and go back out in the afternoon for their third round.
Adams shot a 6-over 76 in the first round, failing to make a birdie but avoiding any double bogeys. He bogeyed 1,7,8, 12, 13 and 17. The 12th hole is an imposing, 684-yard par 5.
Adams began his second round with a bogey on No. 10. He made a double bogey on No. 14 and bogeyed 16. He made the turn at 39.
Adams also bogeyed 1 and 3, but he made birdies on the par-4, 337-yard No. 2 hole and the par-5, 619-yard No. 4 hole, shortly before play was halted.
Only nine players were able to complete the first round on Thursday. The second wave of starting times, including Adams, who had been scheduled to tee off at 2:42 p.m., never got started after play was delayed three times by rain.
