Sports briefs: Area soccer players honored

Catawba midfielder Nathan Zuzga and Pfeiffer midfielder Cihan Nuhoglu are on the NCCSIA All-State Men’s College Division Soccer team.
Catawba keeper Kathleen Blake and defender Leigh Telzrow and Pfeiffer midfielder Maria Reis made the women’s team.
n East wrestlers fifth
East Rowan’s wrestling team finished fifth in Saturday’s 15-team meet at Trinity won by St. Stephens.
East’s Aaron Plyler finished first. Coleton Boone, Chase Burris and C.J. Gordy finished second. Joe Knox and Thomas Lowe tied for fifth.
n Kernodle gets GARS ace
Bill Kernodle made a hole-in-one on the 112-yard sixth hole at Warrior Golf Club in Monday’s GARS tournament.
Gary Wortman was low ‘A’ player with a net of 66.57.
Low ‘B’ player was David Schenk (61.35), Low ‘C’ player was Bill Bradley (67.52). Low ‘D’ player was Harold Hattaway (64.76).
n South jayvee basketball
South Rowan’s undefeated jayvee girls basketball team won its sixth straight game when it beat Mooresville 59-41 on Friday. Nikki Graham had 21 points. Kayla Morrow had 16 points and seven rebounds. Whitney Ashley had 11 points.
South’s boys defeated the Blue Devils 58-52. John Davis and Jabon Stark had 14 points each for South (5-1).
n Eighth-grade basketball
China Grove’s boys rallied to beat Erwin 38-30. Nick Houston (17 points) and Zack Wagner (11) paced the Red Devils (3-3). Luke Thomas had 10 points and seven boards for Erwin (1-5, 1-4)
Erwin’s girls beat China Grove 37-19. Taylor Honeycutt scored 10 points for the Eagles (3-3, 3-2). Krista Swartz scored 10 points for China Grove (1-5).
