Waterworks announces spring class schedule

Waterworks Visual Arts Center, 123 E. Liberty St., announces its spring art class offerings.

Adult and high school classes

Colored pencil

Learn the basics: tools, equipment, techniques and application methods. With this class you will learn to create radiant color by layering and burnishing with colored pencils with no mess, fumes or clean up. Materials list provided at registration.

Date: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-8:30 p.m., March 5, 7, 12, 14

Cost: $55 members, $70 non-members

Basket weaving

Using reed, weave your own decorative and functional basket. No experience is necessary for this one-day workshop. You will weave your choice of a small hearth basket or a shaker cat’s head bowl. All materials are provided.

Plein air painting

This class will focus on the unique challenges of plein air painting: to paint outdoors. Demonstrations will emphasize your ability to see, simplify, and then organize your composition in a straightforward manner. Use the media of your choice, but demonstrations will be given in oil. The first four weeks of classes will be held in the studio while the final four move offsite and outdoors (weather permitting.) This course is designed for all levels of expertise. Basic drawing

This class will explore a variety of media, learning their particular qualities and how to use them effectively. Classes will begin working in black and white using the mediums graphite and charcoal. You will then progress to working in color with pastels and colored pencils. Topics will include perspective, composition, elements of style, line, contour and shading. This class is designed for those with little or no experience. Materials list provided at registration.

Pinhole photography

Want to learn how to create a one-of-a-kind photograph that looks appealing and sophisticated? You can in this one-day workshop, when you construct your own pinhole camera. A pinhole camera is made when you construct a light sensitive box with a tiny hole which acts as a lens. Once created, you will expose and develop paper negatives. No camera or photography experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Bring a bag lunch!

Parent-Child Clay Birdhouse

(3-5 years with adult)

Come celebrate the spring season and create one-of-a-kind birdhouses. You and your child will collaborate to construct a clay bird house using basic hand-building techniques. When the construction is complete, add as much detail to your birdhouse as you would like. You will apply surface decoration, embellishments, under-glazes and glazes. No prior experience is necessary and all skill levels are welcome. Bring a bag lunch.

Art from the Heart

(Ages 3-6) Just in time for Valentine’s Day, create special, one-of-a-kind creations for the ones that you love.

Mother’s Day keepsake

(Ages 3-6) Your creative touch will mean the world to Mom or Grandma when you create an extraordinary keepsake just in time for her special day.

Clay Creations

(Grades 6-8) Students will receive basic hand-building instruction on coiling, pinching and slab-building techniques. Students will glaze and embellish their creations while working at their own pace. Creativity is encouraged.

Date: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22.

Cost: $75 members, $100 non-members

(Grades 1-3) Students will learn about North Carolina folk art while using hand-building techniques as they make their choice of an Appalachian Face Jug, Chicken Whimsy or a decorative vessel. Bring a bag lunch.

ArtVentures

Feed your child’s creativity in ArtVentures for seven weeks of creative fun. Students will learn various artistic techniques while exploring different mediums. Students will begin to understand the importance of process in art.

Grades K-2: Mondays, Feb.12-March 26, 3:30-5 p.m.

Grades 3-5: Wednesdays, Feb.21-March 28, 3:30-5 p.m.
