Salisbury City Council to consider supporting renaming part of I-85 for “Curly” Seckler

SALISBURY — A portion of Interstate 85 may soon be named after John Ray “Curly” Seckler.
The Salisbury City Council will consider a resolution of support for the designation at its meeting on Tuesday at 217 S. Main St.
The section of I-85 that would be renamed is between exits 70 and 75.
Originally from China Grove, Seckler is one of the premier tenor singers in bluegrass music history. He started his career in 1935 and performed on WSTP radio in Salisbury in 1939, according to the resolution.
He was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Bill Monroe Bluegrass Hall of Fame in 2011.
The North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, North Carolina Sen. Andrew Brock, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, the North Carolina Arts Council and Seckler’s family have all submitted letters of support.
A request of support will go to the county for the parts of the interstate within its jurisdiction. It will all then be submitted to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
In other business, the board will:
- Consider approving the consent agenda, which includes:
- Adopting an $11,683 budget ordinance amendment to the fiscal year 2016-2017 budget to appropriate insurance proceeds to purchase a new traffic cabinet that was damaged in a traffic accident.
- Approving changes to a section of the Salisbury City Code about the annual fee for cable or pipelines.
- Consider and hold a public hearing about a $25,000 Industrial Building Revitalization Grant for Southmark Limited III, LLC at 408 Long Meadow Drive. Royce Apparel, the current tenant of the building at Long Meadow Drive, is moving its headquarters from Cabarrus County to the Salisbury facility. The grant will be used for renovations of the property.
- Hear a presentation about the Downtown Salisbury Open House Series on Public Improvements.
- Consider adopting an ordinance to reduce the speed limit along Sherwood and Rosemont streets and in the 600 block of D Avenue.
- Consider adopting a resolution to allow another $24,909.41 payment to Charles R. Underwood, Inc., to finish the installation of a Floway-3 stage bowl assembly for Salisbury-Rowan Utilities.
- Consider making appointments to boards and commissions.
- Hear public comment.
- Hear comments from the city manager.
- Go into a closed session about an economic development matter.
The mayor will proclaim July 17-23, 2016, as Chickweed’s Celebrating the Indestructible Women Week and July 21, 2016, as the 100th anniversary of the Salisbury-Rowan chapter of the Red Cross.
