From staff reports
Rowan County starts play in the American Legion state tournament today against Wilmington.
The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. It’s the third of four games today.
Rowan is 28-11, while Wilmington is 20-2.
Wilmington gets players from the four high schools in the city — New Hanover, Laney, Ashley and Hoggard.
Wilmington has great speed, good pitching and is an older team than Rowan, with a number of players who have played a year of college ball. Most played for small schools or junior college programs.
Rowan hasn’t played Wilmington in the state tournament since losing to Wilmington, 5-4, in 10 innings in Morehead City in 2011.
John Owen (4-1), coming off a brilliant performance against High Point in the Area III championship series, is the probable pitcher for Rowan today.
