SALISBURY — 10thread and Tech Talent South are teaming up to offer a coding weekend to Salisbury, with a Salisbury native teaching the class.

10thread is a collaborative workspace at 1024 S. Fulton St. Taylor Hutchins, owner of the business, said he wanted to work with Tech Talent South to offer the city a chance to learn the basics of computer coding closer to home.

The coding weekend offered by Tech Talent South, a company that offers computer coding bootcamps, will be on August 20 and 21. It is part of the company’s pop-up code program, where they teach classes for a specific amount of time outside of their main markets.

Zack Kirchin, director of Product and Curriculum for Tech Talent South who will be teaching the class, said the pop-up program allows the company to reach smaller markets.

“It is really a chance for us to break into markets that we wouldn’t normally make a permanent home,” he said.

Kirchin the weekend classes will give an introduction to coding and programming with a focus on web development.

“We feel that that is the best place for beginners to start,” Kirchin said.

He said anyone with an Internet connection can work on web development, especially businesses that want to build landing pages.

The first day will cover front-end technology, which is what a user would see when they open a website. They will use HTML and TSS to build prototype web pages.

While the first day will focus on static websites, the second day will have participants learning to code dynamic websites, which includes websites like social media sites that can do more than just display information. There will be an introduction into how to build web applications and how they are different from static sites.

Kirchin said he won’t be able to teach all there is to coding in a weekend, but he will be able to provide a good framework.

“We’ll get you to a point where you can get something up and running,” he said.

The classes will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days, with a lunch break at 12 p.m.

Participants should bring their own computers. The type of computer does not matter.

Hutchins said that with the push towards technology in the school system and different industries, it is important for people to start learning how technology works and how to develop it.

“I think it’s imperative that we know the basics of how these things work,” he said.

After a little back and forth with Tech Talent South, Hutchins got in touch with Zack Kirchin, who happens to have grown up in Salisbury.

“That made an instant connection with him,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins and Kirchin know a lot of the same people, and even have connection through St. John’s Lutheran Church — Kirchin is a member and Hutchins works there.

Kirchin lived in Salisbury until last year when he moved to Mooresville because of his job. He went to Salisbury High School and actually met his wife there.

Kirchin said it was great to come back to the community he grew up in and be involved with 10thread.

Tech Talent South works with 10 cities around the country and will soon be adding an 11^th. Hutchins said he was glad to work with a company like Tech Talent South that can help the community prepare for a technology-filled future.

“Just for us in Salisbury to be a part of (Tech Talent South’s growth), I think it’s great,” Hutchins said.
