Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Little League 12s seek regional repeat

Rowan Little League softball’s 12U team went 3-0 and won the state tournament held recently at Myers Park Trinity Little league Complex in Charlotte.
It’s the second straight state title for this group.
Rowan defeated Wilkes County 5-4 in extra innings in its first game, defeated Washington 2-0, and then beat Wilkes 6-0 in the championship game.
This team will be making a repeat trip to Warner- Robins, Ga., and will start defense of its Southeastern Regional title on July 28.
Many of the girls are back from the team that won the World Series last summer.

Local golf
McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice tournament on Sunday.
The first-place team was Johnnie Story and Gene & Mary Seaford. The second-place team was Alex, Lexie and Erick Miller
Lexie Miller won closest to the pin. Alex Miller won longest putt.

Wood bat leagues
Zac Almond (Catawba) leads the Coastal Plain League’s High Point-Thomasville team with seven homers and 34 RBIs.
He’s batting .290.

Minor leagues
Craig Brooks (Catawba) had his best outing on Monday since being promoted to Myrtle Beach.
Brooks struck out four in two innings. He allowed one hit.
Brooks pitched the sixth and seventh and the Pelicans came from behind to give him his first win since his promotion to advanced A ball.

Prep basketball
Concord High’s Rechon “Leaky” Black will play his junior and senior seasons at national power Montverde Academy, near Orlando, Fla.
Black,a rising junior, is committed to North Carolina.
The 6-foot-7 point guard, is rated as a top 30 recruit nationally and is ranked as the state’s top player in his class.
Montverde is the alma mater of the Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons and the Los Angeles Lakers’ D’Angelo Russell.

Salisbury High athletic boosters are meeting tonight at 6 p.m. in the AP Conference Room.

Intimidators romp
SALISBURY, Md. — Brannon Easterling, Alex Katz and Dylan Barrow combined for a shutout as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 9-0 on Monday.
Easterling (5-2) picked up the win after he struck out two and walked three while allowing three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Francisco Jimenez (7-9) went 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs and nine hits in the South Atlantic League game. He also struck out four and walked four.

Knights fall to Bats
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Chris Berset hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, leading the Louisville Bats to a 6-2 win over the Charlotte Knights on Monday.
The home run by Berset scored Carlos Triunfel to give the Bats a 3-2 lead.
The Bats later added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
In the fifth, Triunfel hit an RBI single, while Jermaine Curtis hit a solo home run in the sixth.

Charlotte missed a scoring opportunity in the fifth, when Jake Peter hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Daniel Wright (3-3) got the win with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief while Charlotte starter Carlos Rodon (0-1) took the loss in the International League game.
