West Rowan Shrine Bowlers Tristan Dorty and David Melton have added selection to the the prestigious Associated Press All-State Football Team to their long list of laurels.

Dorty, a defensive end headed to Wake Forest, was the Rowan County Defensive Player of the Year and North Piedmont Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Dorty had the distinction of being the leading vote-getter on the defensive side of the ball on the All-State team. He collected 14 votes from a panel of 21 sportswriters.

Melton, West’s right guard, collected seven votes.

Melton, who earned all-county and all-conference honors, has yet to commit to a college but has Coastal Carolina and East Carolina at the top of his list.

Dorty and Melton helped coach Scott Young’s Falcons post an 11-2 record.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Andrew Crutchfield, who is headed to LSU, was named the All-State placekicker.

Davie County quarterback Garrett Benge, defensive lineman Chantz Grannaman and safety Matt Oswell were nominated, along with West back K.P. Parks, A.L. Brown receiver Josh Gray and North Rowan QB Daniel Griffith and receiver Bryson Gaymon.

* Trojans fall in tourney

Northwest Cabarrus had already beaten Central Cabarrus once this season.

So what happened Thursday night in Central’s 72-55 win over the Trojans in the NorthEast Medical Center Holiday Prep Classic?

“The biggest difference was our intensity level the first time,” said Northwest coach Daniel Jenkins. “They were more intense tonight than we were. We played timid.”

Jon Hathcock led Northwest (8-3) with 16 points, while Brian Garcia had 12 and Nick Quigley 11. Ryen Black scored nine.

Central (9-3) still could not shake the Trojans. They were within six with four minutes to play.

“As poorly as we played, that’s encouraging to me,” said Jenkins.

Central meets top seed Concord (8-3) tonight at 8:30 in the championship game at Cabarrus Arena, Northwest will meet Myers Park for third place at 5:30 p.m.

* Wonders win in tourney

A.L. Brown got blown out in its first game at the NorthEast Medical Holiday Prep Classic, but the Wonders rebounded with an even bigger blowout victory.

Brown pounded Mount Pleasant 88-46 in a consolation bracket game at Concord. Josh Gray led the Wonders (9-3) with 24 points.

Jacob Newman (11), Billy Simiton (11) and Jeremy Jones (10) also scored in double figures for Brown, which will play a final consolation game today at 4 p.m. against West Stanly.

Anna Freeman scored 18 points as East Davidson’s unbeaten girls beat SE Guilford 57-45 in the semifinals of the LSB tournament.

* Korey Carlton and Justin Burgess scored 15 points apiece as North Davidson’s boys advanced to the LSB title game with a 60-42 romp over Central Davidson.

* The Clodfelter twins, Ashlei and Courtnei, led North Davidson’s girls to a 60-30 consolation win over Central Davidson.

* SE Guilford topped East Davidson’s boys 68-65 in two overtimes in an LSB consolation despite 20 points by Marcus Miller.

* Dewain Clark scored 14 points to lead West Iredell’s boys to a 47-37 win over Lake Norman in a SR&L tourney semifinal.

* Chris Tindal scored 21 points to lead North Iredell to a 68-54 win over South Iredell in the other SR&L boys semifinal.
