Cook-out and outreach event today
Tower of Power’s annual community cook-out/outreach is today from 10 a.m-2 p.m. There will be free food, music by gospel band Heirs of Salvation, an NAACP membership drive, pre-needs assessments, voter registration opportunities, vendors and door prizes. Cleveland — The Gospel Plowboys will be appearing at Third Creek Presbyterian Church, 2055 Third Creek Church Road, this evening at 7 p.m., for a night of singing and testimonies. A light reception follows with a meet and greet with the group. Admission is free.

Lyerly Evangelical homecoming
Rockwell — Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, will celebrate its 125th anniversary at homecoming on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
The church was organized in 1891 with 24 charter members by Rev. C.B. Heller and Dr. J.M.L. Lyerly. Dr. Lyerly served as its first pastor until 1908.
He continued his humanitarian contributions in the small Crescent community by founding the Crescent Academy and Business College in 1896 and Nazareth Orphans’ Home in 1906.
Dr. Steve Disher will be the homecoming preacher. He was senior pastor of St. Paul’s Reformed Church in Newton for 32 years. Currently he is Regional Director of the Evangelical Association of Reformed and Congregational Christian Churches.
Lyerly Evangelical Church is a non-denominational congregation of former members from many denominational affiliations. Dr. W. C. Gaither, Jr. is host pastor.
Homecoming at Luther’s Lutheran
RICHFIELD – Luther’s Lutheran Church, 4955 Richfield Road, will celebrate its annual homecoming on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The guest preacher will be the Rev. George L. Simmons who served the congregation from 1969- 1975. There will be a covered dish luncheon after the worship service.
Homecoming at Union Chapel
Linwood — Homecoming and Revival at Union Chapel AME Zion Church, 4329 Sowers Road, Sunday begins at 11 a.m. with pastor Rev. Dairl Scott Jr. delivering the message. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m. The 3 p.m. speaker will be Rev. Samuel Blanks of Rock Hill AME Zion Church of Concord.

St. Luke Missionary Baptist anniversary
St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Hawkinstown is celebrating the 24th pastoral anniversary of Pastor Arthur Lee Heggins and First Lady Vanessa Moser Heggins on Sunday.
Anniversary activities begin with the 11 a.m. service which will be conducted by the Rev. Joseph Robinson of New Creations Baptist Church. The Rev. Robinson, a Livingstone graduate, has pastored at Galilee AME Zion, Morven, and Simfield AME Zion, Matthews and was the President of the Salisbury/Rowan Ministerial Alliance from 2011 -2015.
Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m. and the Rev. John N. Leazer will head the 3 p.m. service.
The Rev. Leazer has been pastor at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Concord since 1997.
South Iredell AME Zion homecoming
Troutman — South Iredell AME Zion Church 201 Winford Road, will be having its annual homecoming on Sunday. The Rev. Bobbie Samuels, pastor, will bring the message at 11 a.m. and at 3 p.m. the Rev. Dr. Kay Hines, pastor of Caldwell Chapel AME Zion Church, Mt. Mourne will be the afternoon preacher. Dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m.
Revival begins Monday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. The Rev. Carolyn Bratton, pastor of Moore’s Chapel, will be the preacher on Monday and Tuesday, and Wednesday night the Rev. Rudolph Cornelius, pastor of Zion Wesley AME Zion Church, Troutman, will bring the message.
BLITZ at Immanuel Lutheran
Rockwell—Immanuel Lutheran will host BLITZ Sunday (Bring Lots of Items To Zap—hunger and poverty) this week during the 11 a.m. worship service. The congregation is asked to bring school supplies to contribute to the Organ Lutheran Outreach Ministries.
Specific items requested include: heavy duty bookbags/backpacks for middle school/high school students, college ruled notebook paper, college ruled composition books (not spiral bound), plain pencils (no designs), mechanical pencils, quart and gallon sized Ziploc bags, index cards, and Crayola crayon packs of 24.
The items will be brought to the altar during the worship service.
United Baptist Church anniversary
Kannapolis — On Sunday at 3 p.m., United Baptist Church, 3001 Clermont Ave., will celebrate Pastor and Mrs. John E. Jones’ 42nd anniversary.
The Rev. Rodney Eldridge, pastor of New Smith Grove, church will be the speaker at 3 p.m.
Miller’s Chapel AME Zion homecoming
Miller’s Chapel AME Zion Church, 920 Miller’s Chapel Road, will host its annual homecoming and revival Aug. 21-23.
The pastor will speak at the 11 a.m. service and dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m.
The 3 p.m. speaker will be the Rev. Zacharias Allen Sr., pastor of Providence AME Zion Church.
Revival services are Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 22-24 at 7 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Calvin L. Miller, Presiding Elder of the Winston-Salem District, will be the guest preacher.
Dr. Miller is a graduate of North Rowan High School and Rowan Technical College.
He holds a bachelor of arts from Livingstone College; a master of divinity from Hood Theological Seminary; and PhDs from Carolina University of Theology, Manassas, Va. and from Hood.
The Rev. Hezekiah Lawson is host pastor.
Kerr Memorial Baptist concert
CONCORD – The Piedmont Singing Men will be performing on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Kerr Memorial Baptist Church, 25 S Hwy 29. This is a free concert.
United Ministerial Alliance joint service
The United Ministerial Alliance will host its joint worship service at 7 p.m., Sunday at Potter’s House Outreach Ministries, 119 A & B Clancy St. The Reverends Reginald and Gena Long are the host pastors. Dr. Laura A. Washington, Solid Rock Church of God is the guest preacher.
The United Ministerial Alliance will meet at 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 20, at Tower of Power United Holy Church, 601 E. Cemetery St. Clergy are welcome.
Preaching Mission at St. Matthew’s
St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, will have Preaching Mission, Sunday through Tuesday, Aug. 21-23, at 7:30 p.m. with guest speaker Rev. D.J. Lura, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
Pastor Lura received a bachelor of science degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo, and a master of divinity degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.
He served congregations in North Dakota, Minnesota and Pennsylvania before being called to St. Paul’s. He is the author of a book about the Augsburg Confession titled “So What’s a Lutheran, Don’tcha Know.”
Rev. Lura’s mission theme is “Lutherans are Evangelicals.
The services are informal, opening with a hymn singing each night. The Rev. Gary Coble is host pastor.
Trinity Presbyterian usher anniversary
Trinity Presbyterian Church USA will be hosting its annual Usher Board Anniversary Aug. 22 at 4 p.m.
The event will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 300 S. Caldwell St., with guest speaker Pastor Vincent Patrick Jones Sr. of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
Pastor Vincent Patrick Jones Sr. was installed as the senior pastor of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in 2013. He is the son of New Zion’s former pastor, the Rev. Paul Jones, Sr. and Mrs. Alma Leach Jones. He was licensed and ordained by the Rowan Baptist Association.

The steeple will be dedicated in honor of Herbert Chunn and in memory of Brenda Chunn. (Brenda was Mt. Vernon’s project manager for the steeple drive and she was instrumental in seeking financial donors for the project.)

Call for performers at Immanuel Lutheran
Rockwell—The members of the Irene Beaver Circle of Immanuel Lutheran will support the Immanuel Youth by sponsoring a “Back to School Talent Show” on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 3:30 p.m. at the church.
The show will be open to all ages including adult participants whether performing in groups or individually. During the event, there will be a Basket Silent Auction. The show is open to the public, and admission is by donation.

DivorceCare group
Rockwell — Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, will offer a DivorceCare group beginning Aug. 29, meeting on Mondays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. under the leadership of Darren Custer, a trained DivorceCare facilitator.
The course outline includes video seminars, group discussions, and personal workbooks to provide support for individuals recovering from the pain of separation or divorce. Each session is self-contained, so participants can begin the program at any time.
