SALISBURY – Raeford Harry Jones, affectionately called “Ray” by his friends, of 528 E. Horah St., died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three weeks of serious illness.

Mr. Jones was born April 30, 1922, in Salisbury to the late Umphrey and Minnie Henderson Jones. A graduate of J.C. Price High School, he retired from W.G. “Bill” Hefner VA Medical Center as a Nurse Assistant. He was an avid small appliance repairman.

Mr. Jones was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church where he was a Deacon; church custodian; a member of the Salisbury/Rowan Community Service Council; past president of Eastside Community Club; veteran of the U.S. Army; and was a former member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Ethel Chambers Jones, of the home; daughter Amelia Jones Croom and husband David of Upper Marlboro, Md.; sister Geraldine Fauntroy, Salisbury; brother-in-law Robert Chambers, Salisbury; nephews Darryl and Lamont Chambers of Salisbury; sisters-in-law Doris P. Jones, Atlanta, Ga., and Vernell Hall, Salisbury; and a niece, Joycelyn Mitchell and husband Todd of Atlanta, Ga.

Service: Tuesday at 1 p.m. at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leamon Brown officiating. Burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery, Brenner Avenue, with military rites by the Rowan Salisbury Honor Guard.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family is also receiving friends at the home at 528 E. Horah St.
