Area Sports Briefs: Cabarrus announces Hall of Fame class

The Cabarrus County Sports Hall of Fame announced its induction class for 2016.
Posthumous honorees are Kannapolis’ Gerald Blackburn and Dan Dayvault, Concord’s Burl Morris and Odell’s Betty Beam Cartner.
Living members elected are Nick Maddox, Dink Jordan, Earl Mason, Steve Yates, Benny Kennerly, Richard Lefler and Houston Leigh.
Inductions ceremonies are at the Concord Boys and Girls Club at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Tony McClamrock is the chairman of the selection committee.
NFL
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets waived three players on Tuesday, including running back Romar Morris (Salisbury).
Morris had missed the last two preseason games after suffering a left shoulder injury in practice.
He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina in May after a tryout at Jets rookie camp.

Earlier this week, the Carolina Panthers waived linebacker Jared Barber (Davie County, West Virginia). Teams must get down to 53 players by Saturday.
Prep volleyball
South Rowan won 3-2 at home in SPC volleyball against West Rowan on Tuesday.
Scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-9.
Janiya Downs had 11 blocks for the Raiders. Breanna Lentz had eight blocks and 10 kills.
Hannah Lambert had seven kills and 24 digs. Makayla Strickland had nine kills and 13 digs.
Kira Ryner had 11 assists and four aces. Jenna Strickland had 12 digs.
South Rowan (6-1, 2-1) plays at unbeaten Cox Mill on Thursday.

Carson stayed undefeated (6-0, 3-0) on Tuesday by beating Robinson by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-15.
Carson plays at West Rowan on Thursday.
Prep soccer
Khalid Myers scored two goals to lead Carson to a 4-0 SPC win against West Rowan on Tuesday.
Raunel Vasquez and Edwin Sanchez added goals for the Cougars.
Grayson Owens had the shutout in goal.

Middle school tennis
Salisbury Academy won 8-1 against Forsyth Country Day in girls tennis.
Emma Nianouris, Virginia Robertson, Morgan Jeter, Margaret Thurman, Sadie Miller and Madelyne Lawrence swept singles.
Nianouris-Robertson and Maggie Dees-Ellison Frick won in doubles.
Local golf
Sixty-three GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior on Monday.
Low ‘A’ Flight player was Mick Rowell with a net of 65.72. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ross Howard with a net of 61.07. Low ‘C’ Flight player was John Cress with a net of 62.08. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bert Bollinger with a net of 64.17.
Shooting their age or better were Donald Martin, Winsten Mahaffey, Bobby Whitesides, Buddy Barger, Bert Bollinger, O.J. Chandler, and J.C. Ritchie.
