A.L. Brown has released its football schedule for the 2007 season.

The Wonders will be part of an expanded, nine-team SPC that will include two first-year schools — Cabarrus’ Hickory Ridge Ragin’ Bulls and Union County’s Marvin Ridge Mavericks.

Brown’s three non-conference games will be against Central Cabarrus (season opener at home on Aug. 17), traditional foe South Rowan and Mooresville.

Brown’s league schedule is highlighted by a season-ending contest at Memorial Stadium against defending 3A state champion Concord.

College update

Avery Patterson (A.L. Brown) didn’t start on Saturday but hit two 3-pointers, scored 10 points and had six rebounds for St. John’s in a 68-59 loss to Connecticut.

A.L. Brown coach Shelwyn Klutz made the trip to Madison Square Garden to watch his former star play.

* Phillip Williams (West Rowan) had nine points and seven rebounds in Winthrop’s 60-48 win over Liberty on Saturday.

* Guilford’s Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 19 points in Friday’s 67-49 loss to Eastern Mennonite and nine in Saturday’s 83-59 loss to Bridgewater.

* Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) scored 10 points for South Carolina State in Saturday’s 69-59 loss to Florida A&M.

* Ashley Watkins (Salisbury) had four points and four rebounds for Queens in Saturday’s 88-53 loss to Pfeiffer.

* Shayla Fields (Salisbury) had 13 points and four assists for .C. State in Sunday’s 80-57 victory over Wake Forest. The sophomore scored 20 points on Thursday against Boston College.

* Allison Schafer (Davie County) scored eight points for Mars Hill in Saturday’s 90-74 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.

Catawba swimming

Catawba’s women scored 107 points and won a swim meet in Roanoke, Va., over Gallaudet, Hollins and Salem.

Catawba’s Christine Ofslager took first in the 1000 free (11:25.72) and the 500 free (5:34.51). Leigh Spada won the 200 free (2:04.95) and 100 free (57.92). Margeaux Doiron won the 100 fly (1:04.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.13).

Other winners were Emily Daniels in the 50 free (27.40), Kahla Jenkins in the 200 IM (2:27.61) and Brittany Harrigan in the 100 back (1:09.37).

Catawba’s men defeated Gallaudet.

Grant Gibson won twice, including a school-record swim in the 500 free (4:57.00). He also won the 1000 free (10:59.15).

Shane Alexander had lifetime best swims in winning both the 50 free (24.11) and 100 free (53.89).

Patrik Drakes won the 200 IM (2:04.48) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.26). Michael Biehl won the 200 free (2:02.68) and 100 back (1:03.04).

Kevin Flebbe won the 100 fly (1:02.16).

Winter Flight

The 24th Annual Winter Flight 8K Road Race will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20 at Catawba.

The Mile Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m., and the 8K follows at 10 a.m.

Winter Flight is presented by the Salisbury Rowan Running Club. This race is the second-oldest in the state.

Proceeds go to Godstock, the local organization that helps with expenses for families of terminally ill children.

Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys basketball team defeated Concordia 43-20.

Harrison Lattimore and Troy Beaver played well as the Jaguars improved to 9-4.

* Hannah Coulter had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead Salisbury’s Academy’s varsity girls (10-3) to a 23-17 win over Concordia.

Mally Fisher had five offensive boards, and Erika Nelson had six steals.

* Salisbury Academy’s jayvee boys nipped St. John’s 20-19. Alex Wimmer had seven rebounds, and Paul McNeely scored five points for the Jaguars.

* Allie Billings led Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls to an 11-7 victory over St. John’s.

ECU signs Warrior

All-NPC West Iredell defensive tackle Antonio Allison has committed to East Carolina.

Allison picked the Pirates over Marshall.
