SPENCER — The Spencer Board of Aldermen will continue its discussion of the conditional use of golf carts on Spencer’s streets at the meeting on Tuesday.

The board will meet at 600 S. Salisbury Ave. at 7 p.m.

At the July meeting, Alderman Mike Boone asked that a discussion about golf cart use be placed on the agenda.

The board talked about setting regulations on golf cart use to prevent future problems and increase safety.

The state requires the drivers of golf carts to be at least 16 years old and to obey the speed limit when it is 35 miles per hour or less, according to Police Chief Michael James. No speed limit goes above 35 miles per hour in Spencer.

Citizens who spoke during public comment advocated for the use of golf carts and members of the board were not against their use, but Mayor Jim Gobbel said it was important for the community to abide by state laws.

James said the largest costs for golf cart owners would be the cost of adding brake lights and turn signals to their carts if the board required them to do so.

The board decided to allow town staff to gather more information for further discussion.

In other business, the board will:

• Hear departmental, town manager, mayoral and delegate reports.
• Hear public comment.
• Consider approving the contract for Statewide Contingency Funding.
• Proclaim Constitution Day, Citizenship Day and Constitution Week for 2016.
• Consider filing liens on two properties.
• Discuss the lease or purchase of 18 MSA SCBA and other equipment to replace the Spencer Fire Department’s air packs.
• Discuss buying a ladder truck for the Spencer Fire Department from the city of Salisbury.
• Discuss a surplus liquidation.
• Consider accepting a donation from the Citizens for Historic Spencer for a streetscape project.
• Discuss Trunk or Treat at the Library Park and town sidewalk and gutter maintenance.
