Area Athletes Update: Richmond’s Rusher wins tournament

Area athletes update …
Richmond sophomore Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot even-par 72 on Sunday to win the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa.
Rusher won the tournament by one stroke and became the fifth medalist in school history with rounds of 70-74-72 — 216. The 216 was the third-best tournament score in school history.
Rusher played consistent golf. She made 42 pars
Host Penn State won the event. Richmond tied for third.
Richmond’s next action will come in Ireland.

East Carolina freshman Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) has shot 74-75 — 149 and is in 14th place after two rounds of Lady Pirate Invitational.

College football
Keion Adams (Salisbury) had eight tackles, including three for loss in Western Michigan’s 49-31 win against Georgia Southern. Adams had a forced fumble, a sack and two quarterback hurries.
The 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior defensive end has 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks for the season.

Keeon Johnson (A.L. Brown) had four catches for 59 yards in Virginia’s 49-35 win against Central Michigan. Johnson had a 13-yard touchdown catch early in the second quarter.
Johnson is tied for seventh in the ACC with 21 catches. The 6-foot-3 senior has 218 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Khalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) returned from a hamstring injury and had 16 carries for 114 yards for Charlotte in a 48-20 loss at Temple. Phillips had a 66-yard scoring run that was the fourth-longest in 49ers’ history.

Freshman Marshall Long (South Rowan) was a bright spot for Georgia in a 45-14 loss to Mississippi. Long punted seven times for a 39.4 average, with a best of 47 yards. He also completed a 29-yard pass for a first down on a faked punt.

Tyler L’Hommedieu (East Rowan) made a tackle for Army on a kickoff in a 23-20 overtime loss to Buffalo. It was the first setback for the Black Knights.

In Catawba’s 48-26 win at Wingate, linebacker Jamal Lackey (Davie) had a sack and a fumble recovery and batted down a pass.
Catawba’s Brennan Lambert kicked six PATs at Wingate before missing his seventh attempt of the day.
Josh Moses (East Rowan) made a tackle on a kickoff for the Indians at the Wingate 12-yard line.
C.J. Cain (Carson) started at center for the Indians. T.J. Bell (Carson) handled long-snapping duties for Wingate. Both former Cougars wore “65” jerseys on Saturday.

Justin Ruffin (Salisbury) scored a TD for Livingstone in Saturday’s 41-13 CIAA loss to Chowan.

DB Kaleel Hollis (A.L.Brown) made eight tackles for UNC Pembroke in a 49-35 win against North Greenville that propelled the Braves into the Division II Top 25 poll.
The Braves (4-0) have a big matchup against Tuskegee this Saturday.

NFL
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was credited with a solo tackle in Pittsburgh’s 34-3 loss to Philadelphia.

Bradley Pinion (NW Cabarrus) punted well for San Francisco in Sunday’s 37-18 loss to Seattle. Pinion punted seven times for a 45.6 yard average and recorded a 61-yarder.

Cross country
Zachary Marchinko (Carson) was the fifth runner for the Charlotte 49ers in the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlotesville, Va.
Marchinko ran 26:03 in the 8K event and helped Charlotte finish seventh.

Georgia Southern’s Rebecca Parker ran 20:07 and helped GSU win the Julius Johnson Invitational in Macon, Ga. Parker finished sixth individually.

Volleyball
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) has been a big part of a five-game Belmont Abbey winning streak. Cloninger had 30 kills and 35 digs in weekend wins against Barton and Mount Olive.

Hannah Elmore (Carson) had 15 kills and Savannah Cox (NW Cabarrus) had 17 kills, but Brevard dropped matches with Newberry and Anderson.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Emma Pope (South Rowan) had 19 digs in losses to Anderson and Newberry.

Lynsey Corriher (South Rowan) helped Averett win four straight matches last week. She had eight kills and 10 digs against Maryville and 14 digs against Covenant.
