MOCKSVILLE — Gail Sigmon has lived a nightmare for the last six months. Her days and nights are spent in tears. Her 23-year-old son Andy Sigmon vanished April 5 without a trace.
The Newton resident was last seen wandering in a wooded area in Davie County without a shirt and shoes. His abandoned vehicle was found alongside East N.C. 64, just north of Peter Hairston Road.
Gail Sigmon has said her son, who turned 24 in August, has no known connection to Mocksville. She didn’t even know why he would’ve been in the area.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating his disappearance. Officers responded to the area around 2:30 p.m. on April 5 and spoke with Andy Sigmon. Detectives said he didn’t seem distressed or even in need of help. He told an officer he was leaving the area.
Later the same day, witnesses said they saw a man who matched Andy Sigmon’s description walking around in the woods. The man was acting strangely, the witnesses said.
Investigators conducted a land and air search, but have yet to find Sigmon. A private search on the ground found his shirt a week after he was reported missing.
A Davie County investigator told the Post in April the sheriff’s office conducted a search April 5, and the next morning the vehicle was still on the side of the road. Investigators asked Newton Police to get involved.
When the family confirmed Sigmon had not been home, investigators conducted a ground search with bloodhounds and an air search using the N.C. Highway Patrol’s helicopter.
Davie County officials said Tuesday there are no updates at this time.
“We need to know where Andy is and what has happened to him,” Gail Sigmon said.
She said she and the rest of the family “need him home where he belongs.”
Gail said in her son’s absence, her family has an unbearable void in their lives.
“He’s not with us, and we have no clue why,” she said.
Although authorities have nothing new to share about the case, Gail Sigmon said she and her family will never give up.
Several organizations including CUE Center for Missing Persons, the AWARE Foundation Inc. and the Lost and Found and the Wanted have helped spread the word about Andy’s disappearance. These organizations have physically helped search, hosted awareness events or rallies and shared Andy’s story via social media.
Kenny Jarels with the AWARE Foundation is organizing an Awareness Day for Andy on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Little Pigs BBQ, 1904 N. Main Ave., Newton.
Other awareness events will include viral shares on Facebook with these organizations in the coming weeks about not just Andy Sigmon, but other missing people.
