SALISBURY — Rowan County on Saturday saw a heavy helping of rain but no reports of severe flooding.

Outer bands of Hurricane Matthew on Saturday dumped 4 inches or more of rain on some parts of Rowan County. That rain prompted a flash flood warning for the afternoon and evening. However, there had been no significant reports of flooding by the late afternoon, when heavy rain turned into a drizzle.

Although flooding wasn’t a major concern, Rowan County saw it’s fair share of downed trees. There was 50 calls for downed trees, said Emergency Services Chief Frank Thomason. About half involved blocking streets and roads, Thomason said. A number of calls also involved downed trees on power lines.

One call for a downed trees caused structural damage at a house on Willow Road in the Westcliffe neighborhood. It didn’t cause any injuries.

There were several hundred power outages in East Spencer and Spencer for a time on Saturday, according to Duke Energy. About 200 houses east of the Town of Faith also saw power outages, according to Duke Energy.

A handful of car accidents were reported on Saturday, according to Rowan Communications. One accident involved a car and an 18-wheeler that turned on its side. The accident did not result in serious injuries. It occurred at exit 79, which is south of East Spencer.

Unlike Saturday, today’s weather is expected to be sunny and clear.
