Salisbury’s boys soccer team won, 4-0, against visiting East Davidson on Monday.
The Hornets (11-2-4, 4-0-1 CCC) controlled the action from the start and rarely allowed East Davidson the opportunity to attack.
Tony Figueroa got the Hornets on the board 17 minutes into the first half on sheer grit. His constant pressure paid off when a defender and the goalkeeper miscommunicated. Figueroa slipped between them and found the back of the net.
Salisbury made it 2-0 nine minutes later when Juan Silva crossed a ball from the endline, and a diving Andrew Kalogeromitros headed the ball in.
Kalogeromitros slotted a ball to Melvin Bonilla who raced past a defender to make it 3-0 early in the second half. The final goal was scored by Brandon Ibanez on an assist from Rodje Ross.
Jack Fisher recorded the shutout, and Salisbury got excellent play from Pedro Cruz, Luke Holland, Daniel Tinajero, Greg Beltran, and Will Austin.
Salisbury’s jayvee team won 2-0.
Next up for the Hornets is the biggest match of the season at Lexington on Wednesday.

Prep golf
Led by Rachael Mast, West Davidson won the CCC championship by a large margin over second-place East Davidson. Salisbury’s team (Madison Day, Abby Robinette and Ana Romero) was third. Day and Robinette made the All-CCC team.

Prep cross country
In the NC Runner Elite Cross Country Invitational at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville, runners ran in hurricane conditions on Saturday.
In the boys invitational, East Rowan placed sixth.
Sean Incardona led the Mustangs. He was 12th in 17:26. Ross Alexander (38th, 18:33), Jonathan Brindle (43rd, 18:39), Chase Whitley (19:14) and Ben Jones (20:02) were the top five for the Mustangs.
Grace Faller (25:30) led East in the girls invitational race. East freshman Adalie Harrison competed in the Freshman/Sophomore girls race and placed 11th in 22:30.

College updates
Football
Keion Adams (Salisbury) had a sack in undefeated Western Michigan’s 45-30 win against Northern Illinois on Saturday. The sack came on a first down play at the WMU 17 and led to NI settling for a field goal.
Adams has 4.5 sacks this season and nine tackles for loss.

Kalif Phillips (A.L. Brown) rushed 23 times for 132 yards and added 42 receiving yards as Charlotte won, 28-23, against Florida Atlantic on Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla.
Women’s soccer
Megan Bolick (Carson) made six saves and got the win in goal as Barton (5-5) topped Emmanuel, 2-0, in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday.
The shutout was the first of Bolick’s career.
Men’s soccer
Landon Goodman (Salisbury) had an assist on the tying goal as Anderson (4-5-2) fought to a 2-2 draw with Lenoir-Rhyne.
College cross country
UNC Pembroke brothers Jonathan Martin and Matthew Martin (Carson) ran personal bests in the Queens Royals Challenge held on Friday at McAlpine.
Jonathan’s time in the 8K event was 26:35, while Matthew ran 26:58.
College men’s golf
Gardner-Webb’s Jake Kennedy (West Rowan) shot 77-74 — 151 in the weather-shortened Tar Heel Intercollegiate golf tournament and tied for 55th.
College volleyball
Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had 13 digs in Winston-Salem State’s 3-1 loss to Shaw.

Belmont Abbey’s Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 12 kills and seven digs in a sweep of Mount Olive on Saturday.

Savannah Cox (NW Cabarrus) had 18 kills for Brevard in a 3-2 loss to Carson-Newman. Hannah Elmore totaled 15 kills in Brevard’s losses to Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial.
College swimming
Junior McKenzie Stevens (Salisbury) got the season off to a good start for Queens with a strong performance in a two-day meet with George Washington and Davidson.
Stevens won the 100 free (52.47 seconds) and swam on the first-place 400 free relay team. She was second in the 200 free and 500 free and fourth in the 200 butterfly.

NFL
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had two tackles in Pittsburgh’s 31-13 win against the New York Jets.

Local golf
In the McCanless Club Championship, Kevin Lentz shot 67-69 — 136 to win by 16 shots over Brian Howell, who shot 74-78 — 152.
In the First Flight, Ricky Honeycutt won with 80-73 — 153. Terrol Kendall shot 81-82 — 163 for second.
Randy Honeycutt’s 90-83 — 173 topped the Second Flight, with Bordie Perry next at 90-84 — 174.
Kendall is the Senior champion, while Perry is the Junior champion.

Sharon Miller won the women’s Championship Flight by shooting 73-79 — 152. Kristi Laton finished second with 83-80 — 163.
In the ladies division, Robin Leslie shot 91-88 — 179 and won a playoff for first place. Susan Houston also shot 179 with rounds of 89-90.

Catawba athletics
Catawba men’s basketball opens with an exhibition game against Maryland at College Park on Nov. 5.

Catawba’s men are 11th out of 15 teams through two rounds of the State Farm Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament. Mack Sheppard is at 151, while Tyler Mulkey (North Rowan) is at 152 to lead the Indians.

Grace Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 74 and China Grove’s Carley Cox shot 73 for ECU women’s golf on Monday. The Pirates lead the Pinehurst Challenge after the first round.

Men’s golf
N.C. State’s Davis Richards (South Rowan) shot 70-72 — 142 in the first two rounds of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in California on Monday. Richards is tied for 44th. The Wolfpack is fifth.
