BELMONT, N.C. – Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden’s annual Lost Hollow Music Fest to be held on Oct. 15 and 16 will feature six performances by handpicked bands including Jim Avett and Over the Rhine.

The festival will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 15 with Forlorn Strangers at 12 p.m., David Childers at 2 p.m., and headliner Over the Rhine at 4 p.m. It will continue on Sunday, Oct. 16 at noon with Dixie Moon, followed by Stepside Deluxe at 2 p.m. and headliner Jim Avett at 4 p.m.

In addition to this fantastic lineup of top-notch performers, the Catawba River Bluegrass Association will hold jam sessions throughout the weekend on the acoustic stage. Other highlights include a cornhole tournament and fun for the whole family. Young music enthusiasts can make their very own canjos. Food trucks will be onsite offering delicious lunch and snack options and a selection of craft beer and other beverages will be also be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair.

Tickets are available in advance online at www.DSBG.org. Tickets will also be available at the door. Garden members receive free admission to the festival. The festival is free to the general public with Garden admission. Admission is $12.95/adult, $11.95/senior 60+, $6.95/child 2-12, and free for children under age two. Discounted two-day passes are available at $19.43/adult, $17.93/senior 60+, and $10.43/child 2-12.

The Cornhole Tournament will be held on both Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 with 16 two-person teams competing each day. Participants can register for $25 each, but must register two people to form a team in order to compete (includes Music Fest admission). The double-elimination tournament begins at noon each day and will follow ACA rules. Prizes include cash, Garden memberships and swag. Teams can register online in advance at www.DSBG.org.

 

Bands Featured in Lost Hollow Music Fest

Forlorn Strangers is a Nashville, TN based Americana quintet, with members hailing from the great states of Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania & Minnesota. The band is comprised of five songwriters, each having their own distinct sounds & styles that blend into one cohesive voice. Their music is rooted in family harmonies & flavored with guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, & foot stomping percussion.

Throughout his 20-year career as a singer, songwriter and bandleader, David Childers has written about the tension between secular and religious impulses. His albums have always included songs of wild hedonism and uplifting faith but, as his new album, Serpents of Reformation, evolved, he found himself drawn to themes of salvation and repentance. The Avett Brothers’ Bob Crawford said Childers is the “most prolific NC song-writer alive.”

Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist are the songwriting team that perpetuates Over the Rhine. Linford has always viewed his job description as “creating spaces where good things can happen.” He continues, “Karin and I write songs that allow her voice to bloom, and we find musicians who know how to take what we do and make it spark and breathe, twitch and moan…”

Hailing from the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Stepside Deluxe has forged a creative path in music stemming from their influences of Roots, Rockabilly and the Honky-Tonk twang of Bakersfield, California, also known as Nashville West. Comprised of frontman Bil Jones, bassist Jim Potter and guitarist Tony Rogers these musicians are at the core of the talented band of brothers who are dedicated to the traditions of honest country music. Rounding out the troupe is steel guitarist Jim Ashton and percussionist Rick Cutshaw who bring their seasoned craft and experience to the stage. Performing continuously since their formation in 2011, Stepside Deluxe has developed a sound that has been affectionately dubbed by their fans as ‘Hot Rod Honky Tonk’. They play a mix of festivals, corporate functions, public and private events along with their favorite….the honky-tonks….really anywhere folks enjoy rich and creative music with of course….TWANG!

Jim Avett’s shows are a combination of beloved country tunes, his original ballads, and the stories he tells to introduce them. one comes away from a Jim Avett performance with the feeling that this is an honest man sharing his life and his love of music. It’s like spending the evening on the front porch singing and talking with a good friend.
