Immanuel Organist retires after serving two decades

Rockwell—Immanuel Lutheran will pay tribute to Nettie Hill Loflin, organist and choir director, on her last day of service to the church this Sunday, Oct. 30, which will also be a celebration of homecoming Sunday and the Reformation. During the special service, some of Miss Nettie’s friends and former students will present special musical selections and tributes. Those making musical tributes include: Nikki Goodman, Judy Harwood, Jordan Owen, Christy Trexler, Kayla Trexler and Josh Trexler. The Uhwarrie Golden Strings will also play under the direction of Miss Nettie and those members include: Marie Hatley, Teresa Hunsucker, Janie Kepley and Ellen Smith. Rev. Bruce Sheeks, pastor, will pay homage to Miss Nettie during the service, and after the service a luncheon will be given in her honor. Unity in the CommUnity

KANNAPOLIS — Four area churches are hosting a “Unity in the CommUnity” Block Party today from 1-5 p.m. The four churches are predominantly African-American, Hispanic and White, but are coming together to show that regardless of race, language and culture, unity can be found through Jesus Christ. The block party will be held at Centerview Baptist Church, one of the participating churches, 415 Walter St. The Rev. Willie Rash is pastor. The other three churches are Conquerors Shield of Faith, Bishop Tony Hall; Iglesia Bautista Discipulos de Cristo, Pastor Barry Matos; and Trinity United Methodist, Pastor Kirk Tutterow.

The community event will consist of Christian music from various cultures, bouncy houses, free hot dogs and popcorn, testimonies from church and civic leaders, a TV giveaway and more. For more information contact one of the host churches or call 704-785-0549.

Ardis Chapel hosts tea today

Union Chapel

LEXINGTON — The Christian Education Department of Union Chapel AME Zion Church, 4329 Sowers Road, will hold a football program today at 6 p.m. After the service there will be a tailgate party in the fellowship hall. Wear your favorite NFL team attire or just come in casual attire.

New London UMC

New London United Methodist Church will worship on Sunday  at Morrow Mountain State Park at Shelter B, beginning at 10 a.m. Daniel Dickens will lead the music, and the Rev. Jim Pyatt will preach. Following the service there will be a covered dish luncheon. Bring a lawn chair and a covered dish and come worship.

Mt. Zion UCC

CHINA GROVE —  An ensemble of worship arts students from Catawba College will participate in the Sunday morning service at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, 1415 South Main St.

Students in the ensemble are either majoring or minoring in the worship arts concentration which was officially added as a new academic program at Catawba in 2014.

Catawba students included in the ensemble are Destiny Stone of Holly Springs, Miss.; Mia Schuster of West Fargo, N.D.; Madeline Henderson of Mequon, WI.; Reshaud Brown of Greenwood, S.C.; Jordan Ennis of Concord; Dustin Chapman of Whiteville; and Casey Whitt of Dobson.

Eastwood Baptist

KANNAPOLIS — On Sunday at 11 a.m. at Eastwood Baptist Church, 320 Cook St.,  there will be a  homecoming music service featuring the Back Creek Blue Grass Boys with Tori Jones. A home coming meal will follow  the service.

Next Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. the church is sponsoring a car show with hamburgers and hot dogs. Proceeds will help with the pastor’s medical expenses. Pastor Randall Ritchie recently had a kidney transplant after several years on dialysis.

Landis First Assembly

LANDIS — Servants Voices will be in concert Sunday at 6 p.m. for a combined worship service at Landis First Assembly, 302 E. Corriher St. This men’s Southern gospel trio from Statesville formed only a few years ago.

The combined worship service is one of four held each year on the last Sunday night of January, April, July and October at different participating churches. Currently, about four churches are involved, but other churches are invited to join this interdenominational fellowship. Host pastor at First Assembly is the Rev. Bill Coughlin.
