Balsam Range at The Davis Saturday 

CONCORD — From deep in the Appalachians where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge, five friends came together to form Balsam Range in 2007. They already had long solo careers with Grammy and IBMA awards and collaborations with performers such as Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs under their belts. The 2014 and 2015 IBMA Vocal Group of the Year blends bluegrass, folk, gospel and jazz into a new American acoustic music experience.

Gold Hill Lighting of the Fall Fires tickets on sale

GOLD HILL — Lighting of the Fall Fires at Historic Gold Hill will be held on Saturday evening, Nov. 19. The event kicks off the holiday season in the quaint 19th century restored mining town. The Carolina Artist Guild will meet this evening at 7 p.m. at the Rufty-Holmes Center,1120 S. 28th annual NASCAR Day Festival 

RANDLEMAN — The 28th annual NASCAR Day Festival is Saturday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in downtown Randleman, paying homage to its racing heritage with the First Family of NASCAR, The Pettys.

There will be BBQ, handmade crafts, racing memorabilia, cars, kids rides, simulators and autograph sessions (Richard Petty will sign from 4-6 p.m.).

Three stages of entertainment feature the Entertainers Band, the Chip Perry Band Band plus gospel music, cloggers, dancers and the Little Mr. and Ms. NASCAR Day Pageant.

The Richard Petty Fan Club will meet at the newly relocated Petty Museum exit 86 in Randleman in the Level Cross Community.

Tickets on sale for Catawba Blue Masque Hall of Fame 2016

Four new inductees into Catawba College’s Blue Masque Hall of Fame will be honored as part of homecoming weekend activities at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 in Hedrick Little Theatre.

Those being honored include Karl Hales, long time Catawba College speech and communications professor; Kannan Menon ’74 , New York based actor, director and playwright; Patrick Orndorff ’87, professional resident theatre production manager; and Jasika Nicole Pruitt ’02, television, stage and film actress.

At 7:30 p.m. immediately preceding the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, current and former Catawba College theatre arts students will present a talent showcase. Who can? You can…enjoy the rhymes and works of Dr. Seuss! Only for kids? No way, I say…

Adults, as well as children, enjoy a good yarn, a chuckle over a Sneetch, and the playfulness that permeates Dr. Seuss’ story-poems. He encourages children and adults to see the world — not as usual — but upside-down or from the top of a mound of turtles!

The Phoenix Readers, directed by Jim Epperson, is available to perform this 30 minute program of Dr. Seuss poems and stories, starting in November. There is no charge for the program although a donation to the Center for Faith and the Arts is welcomed.
