Morgan Watts: Rowan County livestock and equine kids win big

Rowan County was well represented at the North Carolina State Fair in the Junior Livestock Lamb Show. In the Junior Market Lamb show on Oct. 14, Abigail Wilson from China Grove won Grand Champion Market Lamb which was also named “Got to be NC Champion.” Cindy Connolly from Mt. Ulla won Reserve Champion Market Lamb.
Lydia Wilson had Champion White Face Market Lamb. In the Junior Ewe show on Oct. 15, Abigail Wilson had Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Commercial Ewe, which was also named Supreme and Reserve Supreme Overall Ewe.
Joshua Wilson from China Grove had Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Hampshire Ewe. Lydia Wilson from China Grove had Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Southdown Ewe.
Talton Correll from Woodleaf had Grand Champion AOB Ewe with a Shropshire Ewe. Other participants who represented Rowan County in the N.C. State Fair Lamb Show were Matthew Connolly from China Grove, Rebecca Russell¸ Josie Correll, Colby Menius and Ryan Menius.
On Saturday, Wilson and Connolly had to sell their champion market lambs during the sale of champions. Wilson sold her lamb for $16,500; it was purchased by N.C. Farm Bureau Insurance. Connolly sold hers for $10,500; it sold to Farm Credit Association of N.C.
As you can see, Rowan County had a very successful weekend in the lamb barn but we aren’t finished yet. Please stay tuned for pictures and results from the junior and open cattle show and the dairy cattle show.
Also this week, Rowan County kids represented North Carolina at the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 18. North Carolina placed first out of 18 teams. From Rowan County, Micah Furr and Erin Christner were team members. Erin Christner was also 10th overall individual winner.
