VFW Post 3006 observes 75th anniversary

On October 22 Hudson, Miller, Tatum Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3006 in Salisbury celebrated its 75th anniversary. With members of the post and its auxiliaries in attendance, District 12 Commander and Post Commander Jim Fox thanked the crowd for attending and making it a good day and filled everyone in on the heritage of the post from its original charter in 1941 through present day.

Guest Mayor Karen Alexander then talked about Salisbury’s drive to assist homeless veterans in the area as well working with them to help them become productive citizens again.

In attendance was the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of North Carolina Senior Vice Commander Greg Stafford. Commander Stafford spoke on the history of the post as well as the VFW.

He presented the Post with a certificate from the VFW National Commander recognizing the anniversary date. This post openly welcomes all Veterans of Foreign Wars to come and visit with them.

 

Church Women United 75th birthday

Board members of the NC unit of Church Women United traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to help celebrate the 75th year of the organization. The theme for the celebration, “Remember! Rejoice! Rebuild! was also the focus of the message from incoming national president, Patti Polk from Illinois.

Approximately 45 states were represented along with countries including Finland, Australia, Germany and Africa. The weekend was shared with the Fellowship of the Least Coin and World Day of Prayer organizations.

Some events of the weekend were a Choreopoem by Bettie J. Durrah, a 75th anniversary skit introduced by Young Church Women United, a message delivered by Rev. Martha Barnette; a Catholic Priest and chair of the LouisvilleUnit of the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women(CEDAW) and bidding on quilts designed and made by members.

Attending from North Carolina were state president Judy Springer; president elect Emily Sprague; secretary and president of the local Salisbury-Rowan unit Doris Brown; treasurer Nancy Bumgardner and other members of the state board.

Schedule a mammogram at Nov. 5 health fair

There will be a community health fair on Nov. 5 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Park Avenue Center, 632 Park Ave., sponsored by Dorsett Chapel UCC.

The goal of this event is to promote a healthy community by providing  awareness of services.

Screenings and educational prevention management available on site include blood pressure testing, glucose testing, mobile mammography, body mass index (BMI), height and weight measurements, dental and oral health, nutrition resources, family planning and mental health services.
