SALISBURY — Two warrants were taken out on a man for shooting at law enforcement after he allegedly fired a gun, the bullets striking a door where two Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies had been just moments before.

According to reports, at 10:26 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to 6925 Old Beatty Ford Road to assist Rowan County EMS. A caller at the residence told 911 that there was a 71-year-old male there “acting out of his head,” and the caller was afraid of him.

When deputies arrived, EMS and family members were trying to get the man, Robert Dean Ashby, under control and to convince him to exit the home. According to one of the family members, Ashby owned multiple firearms and was armed with a handgun.

When they heard that Ashby had a gun, two deputies moved from the door where they were standing. Moments later, the door was shot with a .45 handgun, they said.

Ashby was eventually coaxed out of the home and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. The Sheriff’s Office obtained warrants on Ashby for assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official and one count of resisting a public officer. Service on these charges is pending Ashby’s release from the hospital.
