Salisbury’s soccer team was eliminated from the 2A state playoffs on Tuesday by a 2-0 second-round loss at Franklin.
Franklin got a goal early and took a two-goal lead with about 12 minutes left by scoring a on a set piece.
The game was played at Macon Middle School in smoky conditions due to wildfires.
“The smoke was definitely a factor,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “There was some trepidation as to whether to play because of that.”
The Hornets, who made a fourt-hour trip, finished 14-5-4. Jack Fisher played well in goal.
Seniors Andrew Kalogeromitros, Santiago Caballero, Jaime Henriquez, Jerime Diaz, Nick Veros, Jesus Sanchez and Rodje Ross concluded their careers for the Hornets.
Franklin (17-5) advanced to play against eighth-seeded C.D. Owen. Owen upset No. 1 seed Forbush.

In the 3A state playoffs, Cox Mill rolled over Enka, 5-0.
Colin Noone scored three goals, while Connor Moll had two. Noone has 49 goals this season.
Cox Mill will host West Henderson in the third round. West Henderson won, 3-2, against Northwest Cabarrus.

Marvin Ridge eliminated Hickory Ridge, 2-0. Concord won, 2-0 against Central Cabarrus.
The Spiders will play at Marvin Ridge next.

In the 4A playoffs, A.L. Brown lost to South Meck, 4-1, on Tuesday.

College volleyball
Catawba rolled to a seventh straight volleyball win, sweeping Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at Whitaker Gym.
The Catawba Indians earned a 25-19, 25-18 and 25-14 victory to improve to 16-10 on the year. The Rams fell to 17-13.
McKenzie Garrison tallied a dozen kills to pace the Indians. She added 12 digs and three blocks. Alex Hopper had seven kills and three blocks.
Kimberly Hurtado picked up eight blocks and Evan Schultz recorded 16 digs. Setter Rachel Stanford handed out 28 assists.
Winston-Salem State freshman Makala Lytton (North Rowan) had 19 digs to lead the Rams.
Catawba travels to Anderson on Friday.

Belmont Abbey swept Limestone in the first round of the Conference Carolinas tournament.
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 13 digs, nine kills, two aces and two blocks.

College football
Western Michigan’s Keion Adams (Salisbury) made three tackles in a 37-21 win against Kent State.
The Broncos remained undefeated.

Michael Connor Jr. (North Rowan) scored 16 points on 6-for-7 shooting in Western Nebraska’s second game of the season.
Connor scored five points in the season opener.

Local golf
Bill Seamon of Kannapolis made a hole-in-one at McCanless. He aced the 130-yard No. 10 hole with a 3-wood.
It was the first career ace for the 83-year-old Seamon, who has been playing for 60 years.
He was playing in the “Tuesday Scramble,” a weekly event at McCanless.
He was paired with Ryan Burke, Jamey Deal and Brian Fox.

The scorcard playoff was won by Howard, Wagner, Bryant, and Lingle over Dick Hatoway, Jim Brown, Gerald Osborne and Ken Miller.
Frank Masingo won longest putt on No. 9.

8th-grade hoops
North Rowan’s boys won, 34-24, against Mooresville.
Zay Davis scored 18 points. Nick Colson had seven, Javon Smith five, and Kendrell Goodes four.
Next for North is a game at Erwin on Monday.

Southeast’s girls won against China Grove, 47-4.
Leading scorers for the Patriots were Ellie Wilhelm (14), Lindsey Conrad (13), Kary Hales and Tate Barger (6).
Southeast had 18 steals, with Hales getting six and Wilhelm getting five.
Southeast is at Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.

Jake Harris and Ethan Bancroft scored 10 points each. Christian Morgan and Braden Graham scored nine each.

NCHSAA
Taylor Rowland of Cox Mill High School and Luke Bennett from Voyager Academy are the NCHSAA performers of the week.
Rowland, a junior on the volleyball team, led the Chargers to a 34-0 season and a 3A state championship. Rowland, committed to Auburn, had 22 kills in the title match against Chapel Hill.
Bennett, a senior, won the 1A state championship in cross country. He’s headed to Appalachian State.

Scotland County, Hibriten, Shelby and West Montgomery are the No. 1 teams in the AP state poll.
