ASHEVILLE — Michael Jenkins scored 25 points and Phillip Williams added 19 to lead Winthrop to an 88-69 Big South Conference win Saturday over UNC Asheville.
Williams, a former West Rowan standout, was a stat-sheet stuffer, also grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out two assists. He was 6-for-7 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line.
Other Eagles in double figures were Taj McCullough at 13 and Antwon Harris, 10.
The victory was the 11th straight conference win for Winthrop (19-4, 9-0 Big South).
Liberty 96, High Point 79
LYNCHBURG, Va. — Dwight Brewington had 28 points to lead Liberty to a 96-79 Big South win over High Point (16-8, 7-2). The loss gave first-place Winthrop a two-game lead.
Furman 76, App. St. 72
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Senior forward Moussa Diagne scored a career high 28 points, including a
3-pointer to force overtime and the go-ahead three-point play to open the extra period as Furman topped Appalachian State 76-72 in Southern Conference action.
Senior guard D.J. Thompson scored 24 to lead the Mountaineers (17-6,
9-3), who saw a four-game win streak snapped. Former West Rowan star Donte Minter added 19.
Davidson 75, UNC-Greensboro 65
GREENSBORO — Stephen Curry scored 29 points, including seven
3-pointers to lead Davidson (20-4, 11-1) to a 75-65 Southern Conference win Saturday over UNC-Greensboro. Boris Meno had 20 points and had nine rebounds for the Wildcats.
WCU 78, The Citadel 68
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Nick Aldridge had 25 points and eight rebounds to lead Western Carolina to a 78-68 win against The Citadel.
Xavier 91, Charlotte 57
CINCINNATI — Drew Lavender scored 22 of his 31 points in the first half to put Xavier (16-7, 6-3 Atlantic 10) on the road to a 91-57 victory.
E.J. Drayton had 15 points and De’Angelo Alexander 12 points for Charlotte (9-12, 3-6).
Rice 83, East Carolina 74
HOUSTON — East Carolina lost its eighth consecutive game and was beaten for the 15th time in its last 16 outings.
