Jamarius Hairston scored 10 of his 26 points in overtime to lead Carson to a 70-65 win on Monday against Central Cabarrus in the South Piedmont Conference opener for both teams.
Harrison scored the last five points after the game was tied at 65-all.
“He made some very big plays down the stretch,” winning coach Brian Perry said. “He finally gave us some separation.”
Brenden Westbrook just came off the football field but scored 15 points for the Cougars. Guards A.J. Banks, Cameron Prugh and Jailen Williams added eight points each.
Isaiah Salter scored 25 points for the Vikings.
“We didn’t shoot it as well as I think we will and we turned it over a lot more than I think we will,” Perry said. “We kind of almost gave it away, but then we took it back. It was big to win that first conference game.’
The game was tied at 59-all at the end of regulation.

North boys win
North Rowan’s boys won at home, 74-64, against Mooresville on Monday.
Joseph Scott led the Cavaliers with 16 points. North also got 13 from Dayjuwon Cooke and 10 each from Brevin Goodlett and Henderson Lentz.
Mooresville’s Noah Allen had 29 points and poured in 20 in the first half.
“They were big and strong and very good, so this was a great win for us,” North coach Andrew Mitchell said. “A lot of their top guys were just coming off the football field. When they get the rust out, that team is going to be really tough. I’m glad we got them early.”
The game was a rematch of last year’s Sam Moir Christmas Classic final.
North’s early struggles at the foul line continued — 20-for-48. Mitchell said that will be a focus as the team prepares for a trip to Butler next week.

South boys lose
South Rowan’s boys lost at Northwest Cabarrus, 51-44, on Monday in the SPC opener for both teams.
Connor Childers scored 11 for the Raiders. Dillon Kluttz had nine points, and Tyrese Shaver added eight.
Chalen Stafford-Gill scored 12 for the Trojans, and Elijah Isom had 10.

South girls win
South Rowan’s girls opened South Piedmont Conference play with an easy 67-16 romp at Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
Sophomore guard Tazah “Z” Hardin led the Raiders (2-0, 1-0) with a career-high 21 points.
Janiya Downs scored 17. Riley Corriher had six, and Whitley Arnott, Keara McClary and Brooke Lowery scored five each.

Carson girls fall
Elanna Peay scored on a putback that beat the horn and Central Cabarrus’ girls won at Carson, 57-55, on Monday in SPC play.
“She made a really tough shot,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said.
Olivia Gabriel scored 24 for the Cougars. Maren Shumaker had 10 points, and McKenzie Gadson scored eight.
Mahaley Holit scored 23 for the Vikings. Kasey Rowden scored 13.
“It’s hard to lose that kind of game,” Misenheimer said. “But we let it come down to one possession by missing 18 free throws and a ton of layups.”

North girls fall
Mooresville’s girls won against North Rowan, 80-27, on Monday in a non-conference game in Spencer.
Bea Connor scored 14 points for North, while Brianna White had 10.

HR girls romp
Hickory Ridge’s girls are the favorite in the SPC.
They won on Monday, 94-62, against Sun Valley.
Nia Daniel scored 25 points, while Gabby Smith had 24.

Jayvee basketball
Taylor Conrad scored 18 points and Victoria Post had 17 as Carson’s girls rolled 58-32 against Central Cabarrus on Monday.
Katie Jewell, Nancy Gamewell and Malia Hughley were defensive standouts.
Madison Biddy scored 18 for Central.

8th-grade hoops
Girls
Knox defeated Corriher-Lipe, 37-16.
The game was tied at halftime, but the Trojans (4-1) went on a 21-4 run in the third quarter.
Jahavanik Horton scored 13 points, Ellen Yang had 12 and Lillie Rusher scored 6 for Knox.
Corriher-Lipe was led by Paige Chabala with seven points.

Carleigh Perry led the Eagles (6-0) with 15 points. Colbie Perry and Jenna Robinson scored 12 each. Lani Isley scored seven.
Erwin plays at China Grove next week.
Boys
North Rowan won, 42-27, against China Grove.
Camarie McNeil scored nine points for the Mavericks. Nick Colson had seven, while Amir Watkins and Jaharion Graham had five each.
North’s next game will at Southeast on Nov. 29.

Prep soccer
All-State teams were announced by the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association.
Salisbury defender Pedro Cruz was named to the 2A All-State team.
SPC players named to the 3A All-State team were Cox Mill’s Colin Noone and Concord’s Esteban Clemente.
South Rowan’s Cameron Corriher, German Delgado and Adrian Figueroa; East Rowan’s Alex Kaligeromitros; Carson’s Khalid Myers, and Davie County’s Foster Johnson were named to all-region teams.
Salisbury’s Cruz, Andrew Kaligeromitros and Jack Fisher are all-region picks.

Grambling moved to the top of the BOXTOROW HBCU poll after North Carolina A&T lost to North Carolina Central on Saturday. N.C. Central is ranked second, with N.C. A&T third.

Stevens won the 200 and 500 freestyle races, swam on two relay winners and placed in two other events.

College basketball
Newberry’s Musah Sackor has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s player of the week.
He shot 21-for-27 from the field in two games and scored 50 points.
Newberry is at Queens tonight.

Cheerleading
The NCHSAA held its 14th annual Cheerleading Invitational Championships at the Raleigh Convention Center.
In their respective divisions, South Rowan was second, Davie County was third, and North Rowan was sixth.

North Hills hoops
The North Hills Christian girls defeated Concordia, 29-8, on Monday.
Elizabeth Jones had 17 points and 8 rebounds for the Eagles. Ashley Mays had six points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists.

Hurley YMCA
The J.F. Hurley YMCA is registering boys and girls, ages 3-4, for Mighty Kickers indoor soccer and winter indoor soccer for goys and girls, ages 5-14.
