Arts and Jazz Affair sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta  and Delta Fort2tude Foundation

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the Delta Fort2tude Foundation recently hosted their annual fundraiser at the Salisbury Civic Center. This year’s event was the Arts and Jazz Affair, which showcased local artists exposing the community to Fine Art and Jazz Music.

Paintings, sketches, and abstract art entries were submitted by Eugene Addison, Elijah Belton, David Gaines (first place), Nathaniel Gales (second place), Delores Medlin (third place), Dominiqui Kelso, Phyllis Steimel and Alden White. Music was provided by Freeport Jazz Band of Winston-Salem and DJ Neak of Salisbury. All money raised will be used to provide scholarships to local high school graduates.

Delta Sigma Theta, a non-profit organization committed to community involvement and public service, supported the following projects in November and December. Samaritan’s Purse: Operation Christmas Child (shoeboxes,) voter registration, donated personal health care items to the homeless shelter, sponsored the community event “Options for Planning for Life’s Unexpected Events,” participated in World AIDS Day in Partnership with J.C. Smith University and also hosted the Delta GEMS Academy. The GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) is a group of young ladies ages 14-18 who are provided the framework to actualize their dreams through the performance of tasks to develop goals leading to college and a positive career. Ruby Steele is president of the Salisbury Alumnae Chapter.

 

Piano recital with “animals” theme

ROCKWELL — Piano students of Tina Brown of Rockwell presented an “Animals” recital on Thursday, Nov. 17, in the fellowship hall of Organ Lutheran Church. Each student played two pieces: an animal piece followed by their favorite “Fall” piece. The audience heard pieces representing the following animals: bear, eagle, joey (baby kangaroo), kitty cat, ladybug, lamb, panther and shark. Favorite solo pieces of students were My Invention and Fuzzy Wuzzy. Favorite duet pieces were Yellow Spaceship, Water Lily, In an Old Castle, Forest Drums, The Ancient Castle, Russian Folk Song and Take Me Out to the Ballgame. During the playing of each piece, photos selected by the student were shown as a powerpoint slide show.

Performers were: Kayla Charles, Diego Corona, Ashley Drye, Macey Morgan, Owen Overcash, Caroline Poole, Baleigh Trexler, Gage Trexler and Regan Williams.

 

2017 Heart Ball committee members announced

The Salisbury-Rowan Heart Fund Ball committee members recently held a meeting to begin planning the 2017 Heart Ball to be held at the Country Club of Salisbury on Feb. 11, 2017. This year’s event raised more than $17,000. Donations were made to the Community Care Clinic to assist with heart related patient care and to Rowan-Salisbury Schools for the purchase of defibrillators for each public high school.
