West Rowan’s girls basketball team staged a comeback and beat Davie County, 74-58, on Wednesday in Mocksville.
West had a 24-0 run that wiped out a halftime deficit and put the Falcons in charge.
Egypt Alexander scored 28 points to lead the Falcons in their season opener.
Freshman Abigail Wilson scored 14 points. Miyanah Pruitt had 10, and Mary Sobataka added nine.
For Davie, Ashlyn Hampton scored 25 points and Emma Slabach had 13. Hampton and Slabach fouled out in the fourth quarter.
Davie (0-3) led by as many as 18 points in the first half and still was in control, 36-22, at halftime.
West scored 52 in the second half.

Davie boys win
Davie County’s boys basketball team beat West Rowan, 79-62, in non-conference action in Mocksville on Wednesday.
Both teams were missing some standouts who are still involved with football.
It was the first game for the West Rowan boys.
Davie is 3-0.
Dylan Shoffner led the War Eagles (3-0) with 18 points, most of them early. Michael Walton scored 16, while Owen McCormack had 13.
Cory Heiner had a big night on the boards for the War Eagles.
West got 24 points from Caleb Mauldin, 12 from Austin Love and 11 from Jayson Delgado.
Davie was in command, 46-28, at the half. West mounted some runs but never got all the way back.

Boys baskeball
Robinson outscored Hunter Huss, 90-78, on Tuesday.
Lavar Batts Jr. scored 30 for the Bulldogs and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Six-foot-9 Jamari Roberts had 12 points and 10 boards.
Blake Wilson tossed in 32 points for Huss, and Cress Worthy had 22.

Girls basketball
Brianna White led North Rowan with 10 points in Tuesday’s 56-19 loss to Butler.
Bea Connor scored seven for the Cavaliers.

8th-grade basketball
Knox’s girls raced out to a 22-3 halftime lead and defeated West Rowan, 32-19.
Jahavanik Horton had 13 points and five rebounds, Jakiya Brown had points and seven steals, Lillie Rusher had four points, six assists and five steals. Ellen Yang had four points and five rebounds.
Amiya Moreland led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Boys
North Rowan beat Southeast, 53-26.
Nick Colson led the Mavericks with 12 points. Javon Smith scored 10, Zay Davis eight, and Jaharion Graham six.
Kendrell Goodes, Amir Watkins and Kayvion Carpenter added four each.
North hosts Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.

Carson’s girls won against East Rowan, 53-26.
Taylor Conrad scored 19 for the Cougars. Victoria Post scored 13.
Defensive standouts for Carson were Katie Jewell, Malia Hughley and Nancy Gamewell.
Kamden Johnson scored 17 for the Mustangs.

Men’s hoops
Malik Ford (North Rowan) scored 21 points for Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday in an 88-75 win against Carson-Newman.
Ford shot 8-for-11 from the floor.

Senior quarterback Raleigh Yeldell has been named Newberry’s first-ever finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the honor given to the Division II Player of the Year.

Low’A’ Flight player was Phil Cauble with a net of 66.18.
Low ‘B’ Flight player was Bobby Bryant with a net of 66.07.
Low ‘C’ Flight player was Jim Brown with a net of 66.66.
Low ‘D’ Flight player was Johnny Graham with a net of 68.06.
Clive Mahaffey, 81, shot an 80, Ralph Brown, 85, shot an 83,
and J.C. Ritchie, 92, shot an 89.

NCHSAA
Mya Johnson from Roxboro Community School and Jo Leake from West Montgomery High are the state athletes of the week.
Johnson, a senior on the Bulldogs basketball team, recorded a pair of big performances during the school’s inaugural Thanksgiving tournament. She poured in 16 points and hit 7 of 11 free throws to help Roxboro Community past Word of God 50-44 in the first round. Then she followed that up with a 28-point night, including five 3-pointers in the Bulldogs’ 64-54 loss to the South Australian All-Star travel team.
Leake, a senior at West Montgomery, rushed for 380 yards on just 17 carries while tying a state record for rushing touchdowns in a game by scoring eight times on the ground in West’s 70-42 win over Swain County. Leake scored from 32, 69, 2, 63, 47, 35, 46 and 1 yard out on the night.

North Hills
The North Hills Christian middle school girls team defeated Gaston Christian, 30-19.
Elizabeth Jones had 16 points, six rebounds, and eight blocks.
Abigail Zunk and Ashley Mays had five steals, four points and three rebounds each.
