Community MusicThe Catawba Community Music Program provided two performance opportunities for many of the students enrolled in its program.Both recitals were held May 20 in the Tom Smith Auditorium on the campus of Catawba College.Music of diverse styles was shared by performers ranging from young to adult students on a variety of instruments.
Students from the piano studio of Angela Robbins included Meghan Maxey, Emily Maxey, Rachel Eller, Chloe Burks, Amelia Steinman, Mimi Webb, Billy Webb, Gillian Morris, Khayla Miller, Max Patel, Grace Steinman, Sarah Lynn Carlton, Max Fisher, Katie Miller, Alexis Kemp, Asia Kemp, Ike Emerson, Mary Claire Farrington, Kathryn Swaim, Gabe Steinman, Kate Grant, Madeline Hoskins, Anna Flynn, McKenzie Stevens, Anna Chamberlain, Sam Shores, Mason Jennings, Alex Reed, Rachel Hopler, and Olivia Izze.
Piano students from Tina Brown’s studio included Taylor Morris, Sarah Ashley Daniel, Kayla Daniel and Kasey Daniel.Flute student Sarah Agner from April Naylor’s studio and trumpet student Clark Agner from Greg Hall’s studio both performed.
Students from the voice studio of Dr. Joan Metelli included Mari Maristany, Ashlea Armstrong, Kate Ritchie and JaneRitchie.
Piano students from Laurie Klaus’ studio included Joseph Rapp, Dale Davis and Catherine Thriveni.
Students from the piano studio of Susan McLain included Margaret Kaufman, Charlotte Kaufman, Miles Robinson, Jennie Kribbs, Kerry Kribbs and Lake Billings.
Banjo winner
Salisbury musician Richard Pardue won first place in “Old Time Banjo” competition at The Cooleemee Civitans’ fourth annual Old-Time Fiddlers’ and Bluegrass Convention, which is held in Mocksville at the Masonic Fairgrounds in May. This is his fourth year in a row winning first place in this division.
Pardue plays numerous other instruments and teaches music. He has also won competitions in bluegrass fiddle and mountain dulcimer throughout North Carolina and Virginia.
Pardue is originally from Guilford County, but currently resides in Salisbury. He is married to Sandy Shepherd. He is a past member of High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association and has been playing music for more than 30 years. Debutante ball
The 57th annual debutante presentation sponsored by Alpha Alpha Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. was held at the Blanche and Julian Robertson Community Center on the campus of Catawba College.
The event opened with a welcome from chapter president Phyllis Malmud, who introduced sorority members present: Joann Diggs, Lula Holloway, Natalie Currie, Annie Pruitt, Barbara Neely, CylistaBrady, Carrie Boler, Magalene Gaither, Sandra Hunt, Crystal Kelly, Dianne Moore, Sarah Norman, Sue Patton, Rena Sparkman, Teresa Moore Mitchell, Marilyn Jackson. Barbara Lineberry was unable to attend because she is on active military duty.
Dianne Moore introduced talent presentations from the debutantes. Christina Neely recited a poem, Chanale Propst played flute, Natonsha Charleston performed a praise dance and Christen Turner sang a song.Minister Henry Diggs, a member of Upsilon Beta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. presented the 2007 marshals: David Hester, Wesley Cornel Turner, Terrence Clay Diggs, Jonathan Christian Ellis, Brandon Anthony Fleming, Anthony O’Brien Hipps, Aaron Monroe Miller Jr. and Cal Carrell Smith.

The presentation of 2007 escorts was led by Raymondo Brady and Henry Diggs. They were: Eric Lamonte Miller, John Nobel, Terrell Allison, Andre Alexander, Jesse Gibbs Jr., Stephen Cowan, Steven Hunter Jr., Julius Moore, Robbie Pulliam, Everick Griffin Jr., Antonio Teamer, Malik Williams, Donnell Eller, Jonathan Childs, Rodney Knox and Cameron Wood.
The coronation of the 2007 queen was led by Alyssa Gilmore, 2006 queen. Christina Neely graciously accepted the crown as 2007 queen.
Rena Sparkman presented the Miss Congeniality award to Jaleesa Wilks. The debutantes make this selection by secret ballot.
Vincia Benjamin presented trophies to the debutantes for the successful completion of the debutante program.
Jamesha Thomas gave greetings on behalf of the 2007 debutantes.
The second portion of the ball included the Debutante Song, The Minuet and the Zeta Phi Beta Formation.
A dance followed in the Crystal Lounge.
Cardinal Squares
Salisbury’s Cardinal Squares celebrated their 25th anniversary with an anniversary dance at the Salisbury Civic Center June 5.
Square dancers from all around the area attended ń Charlotte, Concord, Kannapolis, Lexington, Mooresville, Lincolnton, West End, Hiddenite, Statesville. One couple even traveled from Murphy.
Jimmy Roberson from Oxford, a caller who is well known throughout the state and beyond, called the squares. Don and Linda Hichman, round dance cuers from Gastonia, cued the rounds.
The Cardinal Squares presented a plaque to James Smith who is the only charter member of the club who is still dancing.
Smith commented, “I wish my wife Carolyn could have been here for this. It would have meant so much to her.”
McGill recital
Students of Frances McGill presented a spring recital May 20 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Alcorn. Following the program, the students received awards. A dinner was served in for students and invited guests.

Brown RecitalPiano students of Tina Brown of Rockwell presented a recital on June 9 in the fellowship hall of Organ Lutheran Church.

Recognition was given to the following students who participated in the N.C. Music Teachers Association Albemarle District Piano Contest-Festival at Catawba College in March: Lauren Thomas, Rebecca Agner, Jordan Hartman, Mandy Harding and Carol Brown. Carol Brown was recognized for playing in the NCMTA State Level at UNC-Charlotte in April.
The following students who participated in the National Piano Guild in April were recognized: Laura Agner, Marian Hough, Lauren Thomas, Rebecca Agner, Kelly Dulkoski, Sara Johnson, Jenna Brown, Nathan Hough, Jordan Hartman, Mandy Harding and Ethan Misenheimer.

Kinderdance On June 9, 45 local Kinderdance students from Christ United Methodist Church Preschool, KIDSPORTS Preschool and Steppin’ Out Dance Company performed for friends and family at their year-end demonstration at Salisbury High School.
Dancers and gymnasts ages 2ń5 were given participation awards based on how long they had been with the Kinderdance program. The following students received participation awards:

The family of the late Whitfield Dwight and Fannie Dunham Graham met for their annual family reunion June 10 in the fellowship hall at Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
Approximately 90 persons were present. Mattie Lee Sloop was the oldest family member and Sarah Rebecca Waller was the youngest. Curtise Graham, the only living member of the original family was unable to attend because of illness.
The children of the late Archie Graham were hosts: daughters Sara Jackson, Nancy Shatley and Deborah Owens; sons W.A. and Delane Graham.
W.A. Graham, who is now living in the Philippines, gave a talk on what he and his wife Letty are doing there. The next reunion will be at the same place, same time next year.
Cabarrus alumni
On June 9, Cabarrus College of Health Sciences sponsored an Alumni Homecoming. More than 80 alumni representing 28 classes ranging from 1948 to 2003 attended. Participants traveled from South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Virginia, New York, Delaware and even Bermuda.
The day began with a breakfast at the college and the chance to visit with classmates, whom many had not seen in years. After breakfast, several of the current student leaders gave tours of the college and of NorthEast Medical Center. The newly constructed college campus that opened its doors in January 2004 impressed many alumni, as did the tremendous growth that the medical center campus has undergone over the last few years.
Several classes, including the classes of 1956, 1957 and 1967, had lunch together that afternoon at various locations in the area.
At 6:00 p.m. everyone met at the Hotel Concord for dinner, dancing and more social time to catch up with one another. Kathy Dayvault, president-elect of the Alumni Association welcomed and thanked everyone for coming.
Chancellor Anita Brown then gave a short welcome on behalf of the college administration and said a few words about the wonderful things currently going on at the college. Chancellor Brown introduced the vice-chancellor, Dr. Dianne Snyder who took the crowd on a stroll down memory lane and spoke about the connections and camaraderie that so many of CCHS alumni share. Dr. Snyder then invited Beth Mabrey ’62 to lead everyone one in the singing of the school song, “The Blue and White.”
Dinner, dancing and much reminiscing followed.
Euart reunion
The annual Euart reunion was held the afternoon of June 17 at the home of Rick and Linda Yost on Yost Road. There were 80 people in attendance.
The covered dish meal began with announcements and a blessing at 1 p.m.
The oldest attending were Carl Euart and Belle Gandy. The youngest in attendance was Daniel B. Sloop, 6 month old son of Adam and Michelle VeachSloop, granddaughter of Billy and Beth Veach and great-grand daughter of the late Mary and George Veach.
The most recently married couple was George and Ann Veach. The longest married was Charles and Polly Webb.
Randy, Debbie and Casey Lomax traveled the farthest to attend this year’s reunion, coming from South Carolina.
Next year’s reunion will be held on the second Sunday of June at 1 p.m., again at the home of Rick and Linda Yost.
