Area Sports Briefs: Hornets win again

Salisbury’s girls basketball team won at Greensboro Smith, 47-44, on Friday.
Bryanna Troutman had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Hornets (5-1).
Tyzarea Alexander had 12 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Anayia Fulson had five points and 13 rebounds.
Maria Capito had eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
Mariah Glenn scored six points, and Mystijkal Phifer and Keisha Daniels added two points each.
The Hornets won’t play again until Dec. 19 when they take on A.L. Brown.

Jayvee boys
South Rowan won against Carson, 46-31, on Friday.
Jarron Hines scored 15 points for the Raiders. Andrew Jones had 11, Bryson Bebber scored nine, and Logan Carter and Keshaun Bradley scored eight each.

Jay Joseph led West Rowan with 12 points in a 53-33 loss to Central Cabarrus.

Jayvee girls
Taylor Conrad and Katie Jewell scored nine points each to lead Carson to a 36-15 win against South Rowan on Friday.
Nancy Gamewell, Malia Hughley and Victoria Post were standouts on defense for Carson.
Ashlyn Pratt led the Raiders with 10 points.

Local golf
On the first day of the 27th Charles Tilghman CPGA Junior Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Connor Armistead (Charlotte) and Drew Weary (Bluffton, S.C.) are co-leaders at 68.
Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) and Stephen Carroll (Concord) shot 1-under 70s and are in a tie for fourth.

Men’s hoops
Davidson County Community College won against Forest Trail Academy, 110-103, on Saturday.

D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) scored 20 points to lead five Newberry men’s basketball (5-4, 1-3 SAC) players in double-figures, but the Wolves fell to Anderson, 104-93, in SAC play on Saturday.

Tre Williams (Carson) had 10 points and eight rebounds for Claflin in a 72-62 loss to St. Augustine’s on Saturday.

Clemson blew past Mercer 90-47 to win its fourth straight and second in a row by 40 points or more on Saturday.
Donte Grantham Grantham scored 19 points off four 3-pointers.
It’s the first time Clemson has won consecutive games by at least 40 points since the start of the 2009-10 season when it beat Presbyterian by 43 points and Liberty by 40 next time out.

Women’s hoops
Shay Steele (West Rowan) had 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Morehead State in Saturday’s 73-53 win against Lipscomb.

Averett’s Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) scored 12 points and made three steals in a 68-59 win against Hollins.

Prep football
Weddington intercepted four passes and beat Hickory Ridge, 24-6, on Friday to end the season for the SPC’s Ragin’ Bulls.
Weddington takes an 11-game winning streak into the 3AA state championship game against Eastern Guilford.
