SALISBURY — A Cleveland woman says her son stole her debit card several months ago and has made several fraudulent charges using it, Rowan County authorities say. Investigators are looking into the unauthorized charges that occurred since at least August.

Peggy Gardner sat down with detectives at her home to review her account with State Employee’s Credit Union to help her identify the charges. Officials say 10 charges were made using Gardner’s debit card. She told detectives that she removed her son from her home several months ago but he evidently obtained her debit card and other cards. Gardner said she never uses ATMs and doesn’t even know how to. Investigators estimate that over $4,000 worth of charges have been made with her card.

Reports show multiple $202 withdrawals from an ATM at H&B Market in Cleveland throughout August and December. The woman’s bank records show purchases made at Bi-Lo in Statesville, West Rowan Grill, Arby’s in Salisbury and Salisbury Trophy House. Investigators believe there are likely more such charges on Gardner’s credit card.

No arrest has been made.
