Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly ties for 3rd in major golf event

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. —   East Rowan senior Nick Lyerly  shot a 5-under 67  in the second round on Monday in the ninth annual Carolinas-Georgia Junior championship.

Lyerly made six birdies and one bogey and had three straight birdies in one stretch.

Coupled with his round of 74 on Sunday, Lyerly finished tied for third place with a 3-under par 141, five shots behind the winner, Colin Bowles (136).

Ryan Marter finished second with a 137.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress, who attends Cannon School, was tied for 14th in the event, with a 3-over par 147 (72-75).

Stephen Carroll of Concord tied for 35th place at 152 (78-74).

The tournament, at Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club, featured a very strong field, with the top 20 ranked players from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia invited to participate.

McCanless Couples

Ty Cobb led the team of Bev & Ty Cobb, Calvin Smith and Lexi Miller to victory in McCanless Couples play when  he birded the par-3 No. 6 hole (the No. 1 handicap hole) from off the green.

The second-place team was David Huneycutt,  Azalee Story,  Susan Wydner and Melinda Rigger.

Jan Goodwin won longest putt.

Indoor track

In the Champion Fast Track High School Invitational held in Winston-Salem,  North Rowan senior Payton Russell ran personal bests in the 300 and 500.

Russell was fourth in the 300 in 41.01 seconds and third in the 500 in 1:18.90.

A.L. Brown’s Cambrea Sturgis ran 40.67 for third in the 300.

North Rowan’s Lakayla Birst tied for first in the girls high jump by clearing 5 feet.

North Rowan’s Chevy Blaire was fourth in the shot put (34 feet, 9.5 inches).

West Rowan’s Jalen Houston was fifth in the 55 hurdles in 7.94 seconds.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy varsity boys basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 35-24.  Charlie Barr led the Jaguars with 22 points, and Jude Lockhart added eight.

The Jaguars will be in action on Jan. 17  against Statesville Christian. Games will start at 4 p.m.

Men’s basketball

  D.J. Copeland (A.L. Brown) scored 20 points to lead Newberry to an 87-84 win against Benedict on Monday.

Copeland had seven rebounds.

Mason Spease (Central Cabarrus scored 13 for the Wolves, who host Catawba on Wednesday.

Demetrius Sanders scored 28 points to lead Davidson County Community College to a 121-90 win against Central Carolina Community College of Sanford.

Pfeiffer hit 16 3-pointers on Monday at Merner Gym and beat Emmanuel, 111-94,  to improve to 13-3.

Josh Calhoun made four 3-pointers and scored 31 points to lead the Falcons in the Conference Carolinas contest. Andrew Guerrero scored 27, while A.J. Clark added 26 points.
