TYRO — West Davidson fought off North Rowan’s relentless pressure defense for a while Tuesday night.

Doing that for four quarters proved to be impossible.

The Cavaliers simply kept coming and kept coming until the Dragons eventually wore down, in a 51-36 CCC loss. The setback kept West winless in CCC play, as the Dragons dipped to 8-10 overall, 0-7 in the league.

North Rowan improved to 11-8 overall and 6-1 in the CCC.

West actually used an 8-0 run to open the second quarter and grabbed a 16-14 lead. But North Rowan regrouped and ripped its way to a 28-20 lead at the half. The Dragons just could not manage enough offense to make a serious run in the second half.

“We went on spurts,” West coach Derrick Stokes said. “But we went on spurts of turning the ball over, too.”

Down, 14-6 late in the first period, the Dragons got things going briefly. Scott Hughes fed C.J. McKinney in the paint for a bucket to close the quarter. Tyler Reamy sank a couple of free throws to open the second, Drew Wright scored off a steal, then Hughes drove hard to the rim twice for layups. All of a sudden, West had all the momentum and a 16-14 lead.

But that seemed to wake up the Cavaliers, as the visitors responded with a 7-0 spurt of their own, keyed by a pair of Joseph Scott baskets in transition. West stopped the bleeding momentarily with Hughes’ drive and Miles Stoner’s baseline jumper. But Malon Herron-Cuthbertson and Henderson Lentz buried a 3-pointer each as the Cavs built their halftime lead.

North, sometimes rotating five fresh players in at a time, hounded the Dragons into a number of turnovers in the second half that led to easy buckets in transition. That allowed the Cavaliers to keep West at arm’s length the rest of the night.

“We really struggled to score,” Stokes added. “And not taking care of the basketball didn’t help matters.”

Hughes led the Dragons with 10 points. Scott had a game-high 15 for North Rowan and Herron-Cuthbertson added 11.

NORTH ROWAN (51) — Scott 15, Herron-Cuthbertson 11, Goodlett 9, Lentz 9, Cooke 5, Ellis 2.

W. DAVIDSON (36) — Hughes 10, McKinney 8, Stoner 6, Wright 6, Adams 4, Reamy 2.
