Area Sports Briefs: DeBose will announce today; Catawba lands Westbrook

North Rowan defensive end Zion DeBose, considered a three-star recruit, will  announce his signing decision  this afternoon.

DeBose’s finalists are Illinois, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Missouri.

Catawba announced two signings on Thursday.

Mike Miller is a 6-1, 175-pound WR/DB from Stone Mountain, Ga. That’s the same school that produced Case Woodard, who was an oustanding cornerback for Catawba the last two seasons.

Carson’s Brenden Westbrook (6-3, 170) was primarily a cornerback in high school but also played some receiver and was a kick returner.

Westbrook was All-South Piedmont Conference and was first team All-Rowan County player as a senior, after making second team as a junior.

Westbrook had two interception returns for touchdowns this season and one kickoff return touchdown. He had two receiving TDs.

Westbrook is an outstanding athlete who is currently playing basketball for Carson. In the spring  he’s one of the county’s top track and field performers in the jumps.

West Forsyth junior defensive end K.J. Henry is getting all kinds of recruiting attention.

Henry is the son of Catawba defensive coordinator Keith Henry.

Henry,  6-5, 230,   is being recruited by major powers.

Dabo Swinney of the national champion Clemson Tigers visited Clemmons on Wednesday, Larry Fedora of North Carolina visited Henry on Thursday, and Dave Clawson of Wake Forest and Will Muschamp of South Carolina were in town on Tuesday.

Henry is a four-star defensive end in the recruiting class of 2018.

Henry is ranked as the No. 2 recruit in the state in his class.

Prep girls hoops

South Rowan girls basketball coach John Davis was scheduled for surgery this morning to repair a ruptured triceps tendon.

West Rowan junior Egypt Alexander enters tonight’s game at Concord with 992 career points.

Prep boys hoops

Cox Mill sophomore Wendell Moore scored his 1,000th point on Wednesday in his 50th game.

Davie romped against Forbush, 84-38, on Thursday.

Heath Slabach led the War Eagles with 16 points.

Prep wrestling

Davie lost to West Forsyth, 31-22, in the 4A semifinals on Thursday.

Prep golf

A couple of Rowan golf standouts will sign with Pfeiffer today — South Rowan’s Parker Chavis and Carson’s Patrick Street.

College lacrosse

North Rowan graduate Anna Lingle made the lacrosse team at Lees-McRae.

College women

Shay Steele (West Rowan) had 12 points, six blocks and five rebounds for Morehead State in a 73-59 win against Murray State.

Averett’s Amani Ajayi  (East Rowan) had 13 points and nine rebounds for Averett in a 70-65 win against  N.C. Wesleyan.

7th-grade hoops

The Erwin girls won against China Grove, 34-30.

Hannah Isley led the Eagles with 12 points, and Katelyn Griggs scored six.

Madie Honeycutt and Leah Hinceman scored five each for the Eagles (6-0).

Boys

Knox came from behind in the final minutes to pull out a 37-32 win over West Rowan (2-3).

Cameron Stout led Knox with 10 points.

Spenser Harrison led West with nine points. Isiah Tenor and Camden Stamper scored six points apiece for West.

West Rowan will  play China Grove on Monday.

Sacred Heart  hoops

  Sacred Heart’s varsity boys lost, 40-30, to Salisbury Academy.

  Jalon Walker had 14 points, while Nick Antosek and Luke Graeber had five each.

Sacred Heart lost to Concordia, 46-44.

  Antosek led the Dolphins with 12 points. Walker, Ben Childress and Will Webb had eight each.

Sacred Heart’s varsity girls clinched the conference regular-season championship by beating Salisbury Academy, 24-23.

Rachel McCullough led the Dolphins with 14 points, and Sutton Webb scored seven.

Sacred Heart defeated Concordia, 23-11.

McCullough led  with 11 points ,and Marina Mueller added seven.

Sacred Heart’s jayvee boys lost to Salisbury Academy, 46-18.

John David Bonilla had nine points, six rebounds and four steals.  Deuce Walker had seven  points and six rebounds.   Nick Loeblein was a defensive standout.

Sacred Heart won against Concordia, 35-21.

Bonilla had 13 points, Kaiden Dulkoski had eight, and  Walker had six. Soyer Cornelison and Nick Loeblein had four each.

Sacred Heart’s javee girls defeated Salisbury Academy, 17-12.

Gianna Patella led with 11 points. Faye Carol Shellhorn had four. Emma Bloom and Kyna Zaldivar played great defense.

In a 32-14 win against Concordia, Shellhorn and Patella  scored eight each.

College men’s hoops

CORVALLIS, Ore.  — Allonzo Trier scored 18 points and No. 5 Arizona roared to life in the second half to defeat Oregon State 71-54 on Thursday night.

Dusan Ristic had 10 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats (21-2, 10-0), who have won 15 straight games.

Stephen Thompson Jr. had 16 points and five steals and Drew Eubanks added 12 points for the Beavers (4-19, 0-10).

Arizona went on a 23-2 run in the second half to take a 55-36 lead with 8:23 remaining. The Wildcats held the Beavers scoreless for nearly 6 minutes during the surge.

GAINESVILLE, Fla.   — Chris Chiozza notched the first triple-double of his career, finishing with 12 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for Florida.

Chiozza joined the exclusive club when he dished to Devin Robinson for a 3-pointer with 31 seconds remaining. Equally impressive: The Gators tied a school record by winning their third consecutive game by at least 30 points.

Florida wasted no time putting Mizzou in a huge hole, taking a 48-18 lead.

Canyon Barry scored 17 points to lead Florida (17-5, 7-2 Southeastern Conference). KeVaughn Allen added 15, and Kasey Hill chipped in 11 points.

Terrence Phillips had 14 points for Missouri (5-16, 0-9), which lost its 13th straight overall and 31st in a row on the road.
