Catawba’s basketball team has been on the road a lot lately, but the Indians are back at Goodman Gym on Saturday for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Carson-Newman.

The women’s game opens  the day with a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Catawba’s men have been on a roll and have won five straight league games.

Livingstone also is at home today, with a doubleheader at New Trent Gym against CIAA Southern Division rival Shaw.

Livingstone’s women are playing very well and have won nine of their last 11 contests.

Carson girls

Carson logged an easy win on Friday, overwhelming visiting Northwest Cabarrus, 69-15.

Olivia Gabriel  led the Cougars with 12 points. McKenzie Gadson and Maren Shumaker scored 11 each.

Sydney Taylor had eight points, and Micah Furr added seven.

Carson (18-4, 13-3 SPC) stayed in third place in the league, with two games left.

Carson boys

Carson put five players in double figures and outscored visiting Northwest Cabarrus, 86-72, on Friday.

“We needed it,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “It was a tough week with two tough road losses.”

Jailen Williams had a huge night for the Cougars with a career-high 26 points. He made 11 free throws.

“He attacked in transition and got layups and free throws,” Perry said.

Brenden Westbrook, a Catawba football signee, scored 16 for the Cougars. Jamarius Hairston had 14 points, while Cameron Prugh and Owen White scored 11 each.

Eljah Isom led the Trojans with 18 points. Ahmod Hester scored 15, 11 in the fourth quarter.

Carson led 35-30 at halftime but took charge with an explosive third quarter.

East girls

Anna Shafer scored 12 points for East Rowan in a 51-36 SPC loss at Robinson on Friday.

“We just weren’t ready to play at the start for some reason,” said East coach Kevin Holland. “We settled down in the second quarter and stayed within 12-14 points for a while, but that’s as close as we got.”

East scored only three points in the first quarter and dug a deep hole.

Jayda Glass hit six 3-pointers and scored 20 points for Robinson. Jada McMillan had 16 points.

East Rowan’s boys got big games from Ellis Taylor and Paiton File but lost at Robinson, 74-53, on Friday.

Taylor hit four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points. File had 13 points and 11 rebounds. He made three 3-pointers.

Jason White led the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Jiera Shears scored 21 points, Nia Daniel had 17, and Gabby Smith added 14 as Hickory Ridge’s girls stayed unbeaten with a 67-37 win against South Rowan on Friday in Harrisburg.

The Bulls are 21-0 and 16-0 in the South Piedmont Conference.

Janiya Downs led South (12-10, 8-8 SPC) with 15 points. Tazah Hardin scored eight, and Brooke Lowery had seven.

South head coach John Davis had surgery on Friday to repair a ruptured triceps tendon.
