Last weekend was Super Bowl Sunday. Most of us found ourselves watching a typical lopsided game. I continued to watch the game after the score was 28-3 only because I tell my students they need to watch the commercials so we can discuss them on Monday morning. Based on their comments, even the announcers seemed to think the game was over. Some people who turned off the game got a surprise when they checked the news on Monday.
I am not a big sports fan. I do enjoy watching the Super Bowl and if I get the opportunity to attend a live sporting event I enjoy myself. There is so much to see, especially if you attend a professional level sporting event. All that said; I really enjoyed watching the Super Bowl this year…and not just for the commercials!
I wondered as I watched if fate had decided that it was time for Atlanta to win the big game. I guess someone forgot to tell Tom Brady and the New England team that the other guys were slated to win. I know the announcers said several times that no team had ever come back from such a deficit to win the Super Bowl. Well, they will need to re-write those scripts because someone just did.
The comeback created a very exciting fourth quarter, a rarity for most Super Bowls. The comeback created a first ever tie game and overtime. I am not sure I am remembering this correctly but I don’t think I saw any commercials during the overtime…no one thought about selling those ads. It made for an exciting night, unless of course you are an Atlanta fan.
I’ve thought a great deal about spiritual implications from the game. By the middle of the third quarter the odds of a comeback were almost impossible. I know there are many situations in all of our lives where the odds are totally against us. The doctors may tell you that there is no chance of survival. The financial experts may say that the mess you created cannot be fixed. The marriage counselor may tell the couple that the only solution is to end the marriage. What each expert is missing is the “but God” part of the equation.
God loves impossible odds. He loves when His people cry out to him standing in faith. If God can find just one person who will stand up and believe in the impossible, look out, because I believe the impossible will take place.
If you don’t believe me just read about David’s mighty men who single-handedly turned the battles around. Consider Jonathan, who started the battle by himself and led a great victory. We all know how Gideon only had 300 men against an army too big to count. There were many times when the Lord helped the Israelite army by raining down hail, earthquakes, and turning armies against themselves. Sometimes vast armies ran in total fear, leaving the supplies behind for the Israelites.
God can also work in other areas. Joseph was living in a dungeon one day and second in command in Egypt the next. Talk about a financial turnaround. He is also good with sickness. Look at all the healings in the book of Acts. God likes it when it appears the deck is stacked against Him. With faith, the people of God can overcome any odds.
I know that some of you are facing overwhelming odds in your life right now. Cry out to God because He will answer. He has been waiting for this moment in your life to show Himself strong on your behalf. He is waiting for your faith to rise up so He can scatter the enemy and heal and restore whatever situation you are facing. God’s arm is not too short for you. The situation is not over until God says it’s over. Nothing is impossible with God.
Bring whatever overwhelming thing is facing you in life to God. You are not alone. God is standing with you. The circumstances in the natural may look impossible, but you serve the God of the impossible. Whatever you are facing is not bigger than God. Victory is yours in the name of the Lord. I believe we are going to see some great victories in many of my readers’ lives because they are going to call out to the God of the impossible.
