No matter how cold and dreary it is outdoors, it’s always springtime indoors at the annual Fashions For A Cause luncheon and fashion show.
“We try to bring spring inside,” Joyce Goodwin told the capacity crowd Thursday at Catawba College’s Crystal Lounge.
The event raises money for the Community Care Clinic of Rowan County. It assists Rowan County residents with healthcare who could not otherwise afford it, providing medical and dental care and pharmacy services.
This year’s event raised more than $13,000, organizers said.
Goodwin co-chaired the event with Mary Goodman.
“It is thrilling to watch people come by and get the resources they need,” Goodman said of the clinic.
For the most part, however, Thursday was a day to view all the new spring fashions.
A number of area stores participated, including Bijoux, Anne’s Dress Shop in Concord, Peekaboo, Queen’s Gifts, Stitchin’ Post Gifts, Belk, Attractions on Main and Etcetera.
The models were kept busy showing off a dizzying number of outfits ó more than 75. As usual, WBTV’s David Whisenant took his place behind the podium, reading the clothing descriptions with unbridled enthusiasm and throwing off snazzy one-liners whenever he could.
Along with the perennial favorites of pink, turquoise, yellow and lime, brown continues to be a strong color year-round.
Black is always a go-to choice for pants and skirts to pair with brighter colors. But the most popular color shown last week was not a color at all: White. White pants, capris and shorts all made a strong showing in casual attire.
Prints are also part of the story this season, with palm prints making an appearance. Zebra prints and leopard prints give you a chance to walk on the wild side.
Pants come in a variety of choices and lengths, but were for the most part flowing and with a wider leg.
There’s more bling this spring, too, with Swarovski crystals appearing on everything from jeans to jackets to elegant evening wear.
Nicole French of Salisbury looked quite elegant. The model from Bijoux closed the show as is its custom. She wore an evening gown in zebra charmeuse print.
“Golly!” was all Whisenant could say.
“I have enjoyed it immensely,” French said afterward, perhaps summing up the sentiment of all the models. “Doing it for a worthy cause is what I enjoy most.”See page 9A for more photographs and caption information for photographs on this page.
