The basketball state playoffs resume tonight with four Rowan teams still alive in the second round.

West Rowan’s boys will play at South Piedmont Conference rival Cox Mill, a team ranked second in 3A.

Cox Mill (22-6) has beaten West three times, including a recent semifinal in the SPC tournament. West (18-9) came close in Mount Ulla, losing to the Chargers, 66-64.

Wendell Moore, a 6-foot-5 sophomore who averages 17.9 points and 8.6 rebounds, leads the Chargers.

Caleb Mauldin, a 6-8 junior who averages 20 points per game, leads the Falcons, along with guards Paris Hillie and Kortez Weeks.

Gametime at Cox Mill is 7 p.m.

Salisbury’s boys (15-7) will travel to Marshville in Union County to take on Forest Hills (23-4).

That’s a 7 p.m. tip.

Forest Hills, ranked sixth in 2A, routed Hendersonville on Tuesday.

Salisbury won at North Wilkes on Tuesday for its first playoff win since 2012.

Salisbury hasn’t encountered Forest Hills in the playoffs since it lost to the Yellow Jackets  in 2005.

Carson’s girls (21-6) play at Gastonia Ashbrook at 6 p.m.

Ashbrook (25-2) is ranked eighth in 3A and won 68-50 against West Rowan in the first round.

Trinity Jones and Jada Davie scored 25 points each for the Green Wave on Tuesday.

Carson got a combined 42 points from Olivia Gabriel and McKenzie Gadson in beating Tuscola on Tuesday.

Salisbury’s girls, ranked sixth in 2A, host Madison (20-7) at 6 p.m.

The Madison Patriots are from Marshall, just above Asheville. They’ll be traveling about 150 miles to Salisbury.

Madison senior Brooke Valcinskas is headed to Mars Hill. Sophomore Hannah Chandler also averages double figures for the Patriots.

Bryanna Troutman, Tyzarea Alexander, Anayia Fulson and Maria Capito average double figure for the Hornets.

College baseball

Catawba won against Mount Olive, 19-5, on Wednesday at Newman Park.

Catawba (7-3) got a strong start from freshman Bryan Ketchie (West Rowan). Ketchie allowed one run and pitched into the sixth inning.

SAC Player of the Week Luke Setzer (East Rowan) continued his hitting tear, going 4-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs.

Zac Almond and Bryce Fowler also connected for longballs for the Indians.

Fowler and Kyle Smith drove in three runs each. Almond, Jackson Raper, Chance Bowden  (Salisbury) and Malachi Hanes knocked in two apiece.

Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) had two RBIs in a 5-2 win against Lander. Honeycutt is batting .324.

St. Andrews’ Lee Poteat  (West Rowan) had three hits, including a homer, and four RBIs in a 13-12 loss to N.C. Wesleyan.

College softball

Catawba split a doubleheader with Limestone on  Wednesday.

In a 5-1 win, Brooke Walser allowed only three hits and pitched a complete game. She didn’t allow a hit until the seventh.

Leah Huggins went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Kristen Stinnard had two hits and scored twice.

In a 10-2 loss, Catawba struggled defensively.  Caroline Turner hit a two-run homer for the Indians.

Men’s hoops

Pfeiffer is ranked 25th in D-II, the first appearance in the poll by the Falcons since 2007.

Jonathan Gaddy (South Rowan) scored 46 points for Barber-Scotia in a win against Columbia International.

Coach Marvin Dixon (Salisbury) guided Barber-Scotia to a 13-8 record.

Senior Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) scored 33 points and led Augusta to an 87-83 win against USC Aiken on Wednesday.

D.J. Copeland  (A.L. Brown) scored 20 points as Newberry defeated Coker, 104-92, on Wednesday.

College lacrosse

Catawba (2-2) held off a late Pfeiffer rally to top the visiting Falcons 13-11 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians even their record at 2-2, while Pfeiffer falls to 0-3.

Dalton Cook scored four goals for the Indians.

College golf

In the Lady Moc Classic, Alexandria Bare (South Rowan) shot 77-84-80 — 241 and tied for 58th at 25-over.

College track

Lees-McRae’s Cody McNeely (West Rowan) won the 800 in 1:59 in the Conference Carolinas Indoor Championships.

Lees-McRae’s Ben Wilson (West Rowan) finished 13th in the 5000 meters with a PR of 16:59.

7th-grade basketball

West Rowan’s boys handed Mooresville (10-1)  its first loss with a 30-28 upset.

West Rowan (5-6) came back from a 13-2 deficit.

Spenser Harrison and Athan Gill led the Bulldogs with nine points apiece. Noah Loeblein, Jason Artis, Peter Williams-Simpson, Nigel McManus and Casey Gouge had strong defensive games.

West plays Southeast today.

Erwin’s boys beat Southeast, 34-22.

Cameron Padgett scored 14 for the Eagles. Darren Jennings and Kane Kepley scored seven each.

The Eagles will travel to Mooresville today.

Erwin’s girls defeated Southeast, 42-29.

Erwin (11-0) was led by Hannah Isley with 12 points. Haley Dalton had eight points, and Mary Spry and Madie Honeycutt had five each.

Sixty-one GARS members played in foursomes at Warrior.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Winsten Mahaffey with a net of 65.61.

Low ‘B’Flight player was O.J. Chandler with a net of 62.92. Low ‘C’ Flight player was Tommy Seamon with a net of 64.63.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bob Stepanian with a net of 62.91.

  Mahaffey, 80, shot a 74.  Buddy Barger, 82, shot an 81. Clayton Steele 84, shot a 76. Guy Schenck 84, shot an 83. Chandler 87, shot a 78. J.C. Ritchie 92, shot an 87.

Prep baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Stallions swept a doubleheader from Wake County on Monday.

Thaddaeus Lankford had two hits in a 7-5 win.

In a 14-3 win,  Seth Cauble, Camron Wallace, AJ Knight and McConner Wallace had two hits.

for the Stallions. Camron Wallace picked up the win o the mound with relief help from Trent Berry. The Stallions will play at Forest Hills on Monday.
