Leslie Shafer, a writer in the ACBL Bulletin, writes that it is poor form to use jump bids off hand and too early in a bidding sequence. If partner opens the bidding and you have a good hand, don’t use a jump bid as your first response. Partner owes you a bid since you changed suits. It is important to leave your partner some bidding room for a second bid further defining his hand. You also have a better chance to describe yours as well. When you don’t know where you’re going, take your time. Many slams can be missed if you, as responder, “hog” all the room by bidding at a high level too quickly. Jumps are left for weaker and imbalanced hands.
